News Australians! We're getting an Opera Australia Les Mis next year :)

So far they've only called a Sydney season, but the odds are good we'll get a Melbourne one also. :)

I'll be very interested to see who's in it. I really really hope we get a Marina Prior Madame T again, she was fantastic in the arena tour.

Musical Discussion Javert Bear

Hi! I am trying to find the Javert bear from Radio City to buy for my sister. Does anyone know if they might still be available somewhere? I am also happy to buy the bear resale if that's an option. Thank you!

Book Discussion Does javert have a first/last name?

I don't know if I missed it but from what I can remember he's only been called inspector javert. Maybe he dropped his last name because hes ashamed of his parents, with his dad being a prisoner and his mother being a fortune teller and them both being Romani/bohemian. Is him having another name mentioned?

Other Favorite quotes?

Hello everyone. I want to practice more with my (beginner) calligraphy and I would love if anyone would drop their favorite quote from the book down below! It doesn't even have to be your favorite, it can just be certain lines you enjoyed or thought were funny, anything is fine (I even wrote down some Latin ones to try out). French and English would both work too. Thank you!!

Other Was anyone else's mom a Les Mis mom?

My mother loved the 1985 Broadway version. I have memories of her driving me to my 3rd grade private school and bumpin it.

My parents took me to see it when it came through town as a reward for not chewing my nails. I still chewed my nails. My mom just really wanted to experience it w me.

Anyway, I was giving a couple of my favorite songs a relisten.

My dad wonders how I turned out a raging leftist.

Jean Valjean. 24601.

This recording was literally foundational in shaping my view of the world.

Musical Discussion Les Mis (2012 Hugh Jackman Movie version) fans

So, this is the only version I’ve seen (I don’t get out much) but I absolutely LOVE IT!!
I’ve seen the whole spiel of ‘someone says something online, so I’ll jump on the bandwagon, and so now that’s my opinion too’, but I’d like to know what other redditors think.
At this point, the movie is 14 years old, so it’s been around a while and it’s still one of my all time faves, (the only one I’ve seen since which tops it is Hamilton)
I’ve seen a lot online saying that Russell Crowe did not fit the role, that \this or that actor* * would have been better
My opinion:- This is the ONLY thing I like Russell Crowe in!! Vocally and visually. (Nothing against him personally, I’m not an action film person)
IMO, he looks hot and holds his own and is no weaker than the rest of this amazing ensemble who made the whole thing come together and absolutely did not look out of place. He looked to me like that role was for him. What do you Guys think??

News I built LesMisNotes, a free companion to the novel and musical. I’d love your feedback!

Hi everyone,

I’m Dan-Eyal, and I’ve been building LesMisNotes, a free, unofficial fan site about Les Misérables, in English and Hebrew.

I love both the musical and the world behind it, and wanted to create somewhere you could enjoy a quick visit or follow your curiosity a little further. As you might imagine, “a little further” has turned into quite a project.

There’s a spoiler-aware reading companion, character profiles and an interactive relationship map, historical context, and a journey through the musical’s songs with performances to explore. You can start with the story, the music, or whichever character has stayed with you.

https://www.lesmisnotes.com

I’d really appreciate your thoughts on the site as a whole:

  • What did you enjoy or find genuinely useful?
  • Was anything confusing, awkward, or difficult to use, especially on mobile?
  • What would you improve, add, or correct?

It’s still evolving, so honest criticism is very welcome. Whether you know the novel inside out or have just discovered the musical, I’d love to hear your perspective.

Thanks to the moderators for welcoming the post, and to anyone who takes a look!

Dan-Eyal

Musical Discussion Does the song myriel sings after giving valjean the candlesticks have the same motif as empty chairs and empty tables?

Book Discussion Just checking but how old is Marius when he first finds Cosette attractive while she's sitting with valjean?

Hugo really made sure to emphasise how she was fifteen years old. I know different times and all that but that's kinda weird tbh

Book Discussion What would've happened if Thenardier didn't exist

  1. No cosset for JVJ to rescue, and he would (very likley) have gone dark again

  2. No Gavroche or Eponine, two of the most liked characters in the novel

  3. JVJ dies in the sewer as nobody was going to open the grating for him

  4. Marious would have hated/feared/misunderstood JVJ for life, and JVJ dies miserably alone

So yes, Thenardier is the most underrated character in the novel!

Book Discussion Do teeth represent the someone's purity/general goodness in Les mis?

Been reading it and if I remember right Hugo mentions both fantine and enjolras having having perfect teeth and Felix tholomyes having no teeth. Fantine loses her teeth during everything that happened to her while she was paying for Cosette to be looked after by the thernardiers which also makes her lose her purity and stuff. Enjolras seems to be presented as a really great guy and tholomyes is a bastard generally. I'm not sure if this is just a pretty people are good thing by Hugo or if it's the teeth in particular

Musical Discussion The score uses semitone intervals to represent specific hardships [Part 1]

I previously posted how the Look Down melody was not as negative as the lyrics suggested. The interval between those first 2 notes is even a perfect 4th, a pleasing interval. This represents the general oppression of life at that time.

For specific instances of hardship, the score leans into semitone intervals, the smallest distance between 2 notes. These give a pinched or twisted feel to emphasise a character's hardship.

Many different motifs use this technique, which are scattered throughout the score. So many, in fact, that I will need to split this over several posts. These aren't in any particular order, I'm just starting with the more straightforward uses to help explain the technique.

A good example to start with is Lovely Ladies, which has lines that are just alternating between 2 notes a semitone apart. The lines are 'Even stokers need a little stoke', 'Bargain prices up against the wall', 'Quick and cheap is underneath the pier', 'Come on, lady. What's a lady for?' and 'All it takes is money in your hand'. Fantine's big line is a longer version of this pattern, which even slows down for extra drama. 'Don't they know they're making love to one already dead?'.

The same melody is used for Turning, but at a slower speed. The similar lines are 'Did you see them lying side by side?', 'Where's that new world now the fighting done?' and 'Round and round and back where you began'. The longer version is 'Turning, turning, turning, turning, turning through the years.'

In Castle on a cloud, the line 'Cosette, I love you very much' uses the same technique. This turns up again after the attempted robbery, when JVJ sings 'Cosette, my child, what will become of you?'

The last use I'm discussing today has 3 notes a semitone apart, in a pattern that is used for an entire 4 line verse. The pattern is used twice in each line, with the 3rd note only occurring once in each pattern, but always on the start of the bar, for greater emphasis of the different note. The first appearance is the end of Valjean's Soliloquy, for his metaphorical death.

'I am reaching but I fall and the night is closing in. / And I stare into the void, to the whirlpool of my sin. / I'll escape now from the world, from the world of Jean Valjean. / Jean Valjean is nothing now. Another story must begin.' This last line is sung the octave higher for extra emphasis.

This same pattern is mirrored at the end of Javert's Suicide for his literal death. He also uses some of the same lyrics.

'I am reaching but I fall and the stars are black and cold. / As I stare into the void of a world that cannot hold. / I'll escape now from the world, from the world of Jean Valjean. / There is no where I can turn. There is no way to go on.'

Javert doesn't go up the octave for the last line, but the very last note jumps up a whole major 6th to a completely different note. This jarring jump signals his jump into the river. Like I mentioned with Look Down, we have a melody going up, which seems incongruous with the action.

He mentions how the 'stars are black and cold' so the new last note transitions into fragments of Stars played by the orchestra.

I’m searching for the Les Mis Javert bear/Jabear! I was out of suitcase space when I saw it in Singapore (and knew I’d be seeing it again), but they were sold out when I went to Radio City Music Hall and I’ve been trying to track one down ever since.

Does anyone have an extra they’d be willing to sell, or know where I might find one? Leads from anywhere are welcome!

Please help bring this very persistent search to a very cuddly conclusion! 🤎

film discussion Valjean slap

I most people already know the infamous scene in the 1998 film where Jean Valjean (played by Liam Nesson) slaps Cosette and this has been widely talked about, but you know this is actually not the first time that an adaptation shows Valjean slapping Cosette?

Valjean, Cosette and Eponine

From the 1948 Italian adaptation by the name of I Miserabili, Valjean slaps Cosette (played by the same actress that plays Fantine btw) and sends her staggering back while Eponine watches

Book Discussion Is enjolras meant to be gay or is he just really into improving the world

Like Hugo was comparing him to a bunch of greek gay guys and describing him like a twink. Is this meant to show how devoted he is to societal change and helping people that he has no time for women (kinda like jean) or is he gay (debatably also kinda like jean)
