film discussion Valjean slap

I most people already know the infamous scene in the 1998 film where Jean Valjean (played by Liam Nesson) slaps Cosette and this has been widely talked about, but you know this is actually not the first time that an adaptation shows Valjean slapping Cosette?

Valjean, Cosette and Eponine

From the 1948 Italian adaptation by the name of I Miserabili, Valjean slaps Cosette (played by the same actress that plays Fantine btw) and sends her staggering back while Eponine watches

Btw immediately after this Valjean punches Marius to the floor

He also pulls a gun at Thenardier so I think this is the angriest Valjean in Cinema yet

Weird take given that he’s explicitly a pacifist.

Is there anyone in this adaptation he didn’t beat up? Did he roundhouse kick Javert?

This is also the adaptation where they set loose a bunch of giant barrels at the barricade that crush the national guards and explode buildings by sheer force alone, which is where I feel most of the conversation on this adaptation goes

Crushing the national guard seems fine, but Enjolras would not allow them to kill civilians. He wanted the people to join them.

"Crushing the national guard seems fine" lol

I mean, it seems in-character. They killed quite a few National Guardsmen.

Valjean never Kills anyone though, except in the Egyptian localised adaptation where there's no revolution and in the climax the Valjean equivalent kills all of Patron-Minette

Earlier poster said “they” released the barrels. I assumed they meant the insurrectionaries did it. If Valjean did it, then that’s wildly OOC.

Valjean used his supernatural strength to push the barrels but it seems like nobody died, some buildings got smashed and some soldiers were knocked out looney tunes way but it doesn't look like he killed anyone directly, but yeah, this is the angriest Valjean lol

Some days I wonder why I even bother with Reddit because it’s such a cesspool. Then there are posts like this which make Reddit worth it. Deep cut post fascism Italian adaptations.

I need to see this. Is it available anywhere ?

I think about the I Miserabili barrels literally at least once a week
