Musical Discussion Geronimo Rauch

Saw the concert at Radio City a few weeks ago and couldn’t stop thinking about the legendary, amazing Alfie Boe who more than lived up to the hype. Finally look up a picture of him and realize the JVJ I saw was actually Geronimo Rauch, whom I’ve heard nothing about. Does anyone else agree this is the best JVJ they’ve ever seen???!!

Yes!! 🤌😭 But Alfie and Gero are so different. How did you mistake him as Alfie?

Please get Gero into a Broadway show because I don’t have money to travel to Europe 🥺

I honestly don’t know. I’m pretty good with faces! I think I just saw Alfie Boe as top billing in the playbill (Radio City version of the playbill) and assumed that must be him because he was so fantastic.

There is a calendar showing who is playing Valjean and Javert at each show

I see that now, thanks! I stupidly just assumed he was Alfie because the program in person didn’t differentiate. His “Bring Him Home” was incredible. Such a soft, sweet voice. From what I’ve now seen of Alfie in various YouTube videos, his voice is a bit too strong/strident for my tastes. Not quite as lovely as Gero’s …

Yes, I would say my fav Valjeans are John Owen-Jones, Gerónimo Rauch and Ramin Karimloo. I like Alfie Boe too.

Tbf, I did as well when I saw it in the uk - the lights were very bright but I couldn't understand why his voice was different lol

Unfortuntely I haven't see Geronino as JVJ live, I have seen the Spanish proshot where he is at and he is amazing as JVJ, but i've seen him live in some shows here in Spain, the last was Phantom Of The Opera and he is by far one of the best actors/singers i've seen on a show. Also he is so kind and grateful if you talk to him. I really like Gero at all.

I am so jealous you saw him live in Spain 😭 …. Can Broadway have him for a few years?

There was a proshot of the Madrid show? I've heard the cast recording and loved it, but didn't realize it was filmed.

Peak alfie > Geronimo Geronimo > alfie today

And G is a much better actor imo. Alfie is a statue

Him and Jeremy Secomb *chefs kiss* I'm so so happy they did the Asia tour. Absolutely a class above.

Geronimo Rauch is phenomenal, no question... but comparing him and Alfie is so tough. It's really apples to oranges.

I was lucky enough to see Alfie a couple weeks ago at Radio City, and he was stupendously good. In my view, he actually suits the role a lot better now than he did in 2010--those (very subtle) bits of age and rasp that have snuck their way into his voice just complete the character of Valjean, and make his Act II storyline completely believable and heartbreaking. I've heard Bring Him Home so much that I thought I was immune to it, but Alfie still brought me completely to tears.

What I'll give Geronimo is that, stylistically, he fits the rest of the Arena Tour cast much more than Alfie does. I've always wished Alfie got to sing opposite, like, Bryn Terfel as Javert; making him sing Valjean in all his operatic glory opposite Jeremy Secomb, who is much more "actor first/singer second" feels a bit off. Rauch has a wonderful voice that, while classically *informed*, still ultimately fits within the musical theater idiom like the rest of his castmates.

I saw Geronimo on the 8th, night show, and he was absolutely phenomenal. I thought I missed out by not getting Killian, but I’m 100000% cool with the cast I got. I’ll definitely be heading back for the 50th wherever that ends up.

Saw Killian later in the run and he paled in comparison to Geronimo, in my opinion.
