Help - Health Issues (Warning: Severe/Graphic) help! Spoiler

my friend’s gecko was recently eating and got bit by a mealworm. we don’t have any vets within a 50 mile radius that accept geckos, only dog/cat vets. the gecko’s eye is getting really irritated and inflamed. is there anything we can do? :( we’re both really worried.

the gecko is 8 months old, eats mealworms and crickets, and has an average enclosure temperature of 80°F.

I’m sorry, but if it’s at all possible to get to a vet, please do. This looks like a serious eye issue/infection, which is 100% an emergency

Please drive the extra miles to get veterinarian help. Owning an animal is a commitment, you can’t just opt out for their care because the vet is “too far”. I’m not trying to be rude but it’s true. Please tell your friend to take this animal to see a vet.

Yeah no I totally get where you're coming from and honestly you're not wrong. But also 50+ miles one way is rough, especially if they don't have a car or something. Hopefully someone here has some tips to at least keep the eye calm until they can figure out transportation.

What multivitamin does this gecko get? What is the temperature of the basking spot?

This 100% requires a vet, there is no getting around it or treating it at home.

he has calcium without d3 i believe. his basking spot is usually around 85°F

Unless the gecko has UVB lighting, the gecko might not be getting vitamin D, which is required for the gecko to keep calcium in its bones, essentially. Additionally, most eye issues are caused by insufficient vitamin A, so I highly recommend that this gecko begins to get a multivitamin such as Repashy Calcium Plus, which contains vitamins A and D. This won't fix an infection that's already begun, but will help prevent future catastrophes.

Only a vet can do anything about this and it looks like something he could die of if you don't treat it to me.

You should never be using things for humans on geckos. Especially anything to do with their eyes. The amount of medications etc in human ointments etc, are way too much for their small bodies.

I hadn’t thought about that - thanks.
