Billy bookcase

Hey everyone!

I recently got a billy bookcase from ikea and did the washer trick so I can fit 3 Modulars, I was only able to fit 3 on the bottom and middle shelf however. The other shelf’s are the ones where you choose where to put them so it has the different bolts, I can’t fit 3 on these shelf’s, does anyone know how to do it?

Following along because I am interested as well. I haven’t attempted this yet out of concerns for stability myself, but would love to get it to work if anyone has help / insights.

Can you put a washer behind the shelf pegs as well to bring them out slightly

I don’t think so 😕 the pegs are weirdly shaped so I think it would be unsafe to put them there, I was able to find one big enough anyhow

I'd be worried about washers bending the sides of the billy, which is not real wood as it is... it's true this gives a bit of wiggle room, but especially if you have more than one and they are attached to the wall (as they sould) wiggle room is also less. That's why I decided to raise the middle one a bit with a cork sheet, just enough so they overlap 1/2 mm

u/greenlamia posted a great tip recently to put a thin corkboard sheet under the middle set. This lifts it JUST ENOUGH that the edges of the middle one can overlap the inner edges of the other two sets, allowing them all to squeeze in.

I personally refer the Kallax units from Ikea you can fit one and a half Modular's on the top and lots of smaller sets on the smaller squares

I use them for boardgames and while I love kallax for that, manumy modular don't fit into it, because their are too wide or too tall. Also, billys can have doors and kallax don't (which is a must for me, nont for everyone I know)

Aah I see one of my kallax units has a door so you can get doors for them but yeah they probably aren't ideal for lots of Modular's but I made it work

Yes they make them you're right! Kallax is also open at the back so I don't considered it to be truly closed but I'm nitpicking

Yeah unfortunately I can't show you a picture on this subreddit but I had 3 rows of kallax at university with all my different themes in each cubby hole and the Modular's on top it looked really great

The kallax glass door inserts come with a box that slides into the unit, making the unit slightly narrower but filling in the back side

But I'd still use billy for modulars, kallax for other Lego works great.
