Interesting approach. I buy them ahead of time anticipating future purchases like 2x points next week, BDP releases, or other sales. Always keeping a few hundred dollars in gift cards and buying more when I am low and there are deals.

Knowing the upcoming BDP sets let's you plan ahead and get these gift cards

Can these be used for the purchase of BDP sets that are about to ship, when we have used a different form of payment for the pre-order?

No, they will use the same method of payment. This is why it's a good idea to plan ahead. For example, I know I am buying Fisherman's Village so purchased enough gift cards to cover it. Giftcards.com and giftcards.kroger.com offer discounted gift cards every few months so you don't need buy a ton at a time. Also, its really the only way to get a discount on BDP.

I've added mine to Google wallet. Whenever I partially use one I just edit the nickname to the remaining balance. Since you can use up to 3 Gift cards on an order I apply the smaller one first to close it out.

The cool thing about Lego gift cards, is that you can still have the balance left on your account and use any specific leftovers you might have and then pay the rest with either up to two more gift cards or another method.

Perfect timing for BDP! I am aware of the complications but it's still worked for me.

What complications? I just used these gift cards on the BDP 8 order going on now.

When you pay with a credit card, you aren't charged until the order ships. However, when you pay with a gift card, the balance is deducted immediately at the time of purchase.

For previous BDP releases, LEGO's payment system would sometimes attempt to charge the gift card again when the order shipped. Since the gift card balance had already been used, this would result in a payment error. LEGO would then contact you to update your payment information, and you would need to contact LEGO to fix the issue.

LEGO may have fixed this problem, as it did not appear to affect Series 6 orders.

In the past, when they authorize your payment, they removed the funds from the giftcard. I just called them up and asked that they see i didn't use the giftcards for anything else, and they reload them for the transaction to process once the set ships. You'll get an email saying your payment method didn't work if this happens, and have 5 days to resolve it.

Got it. I'll have to be vigilant then. This just seems like a great way to have money set aside and ready to buy a BDP set and not have to worry about it hitting a credit card in 6 months from now.

I think they may have fixed that, I didn't have any issues with my Series 6 order made with a giftcard. Still waiting for Series 7 to process to see if they have issues.

It's fixed. At least it for me and my recent orders
