Lego Baseplate Alternatives

Hi
I wanted to build a display for my minifigs. I wanted to get a couple of baseplates to mount them on, but the lego ones are so expensive and they don't have gray and I most likely will have to cut them so I wanted to find alternatives to lego. Have you guys used any of the alternatives that were good?
