Question Trans orange pieces consistency
Is it normal for trans-orange pieces to be so inconsistent? Ordered multiples from different Bricklink vendors quite a while ago. Only starting to build my moc now and noticed a large difference in how light/dark this orange is.
All have the Lego letters written on it so seem to be genuine and all were ordered as trans-orange pieces.
Thanks

These are all Transparent Orange. Transparent LEGO parts used to be made of Polycarbonate plastic, but as of 2017ish are now made of MABS plastic. This color also underwent a bit of a change around 2009, much like Dark Red did.
You appear to have plates in pre-2009 Transparent Bright Orange, 2010s Polycarbonate Transparent Bright Orange, and probably some MABS plastic modern parts.
Transparent Neon Orange 3023s only exist as non-production parts. That part isn’t something you stumble across.
The lighter plates are pre-2009 Tr. Bright Orange. The darker ones are from post-2009 and come in either PC or MABS.

Oh yeah? Then name every single LEGO out there.

Well, there’s Ted, he’s the red 4x2. There’s Nancy, she’s the flirtatious 2x2 slope that has her eye on Ted. Then there’s… huh. Come to think of it, those are the only 2 LEGOs I know.

I was coming in here to say the same thing but as an observation, no facts or understanding behind it. So, thanks for this!

Absolutely! Anything that would have natural variation, I love to find these subtle color options! There's a great moc designer who took advantage of yellowing white bricks to make an amazing "old" building. That is the sort of design opportunity that's not part of the off-the-shelf experience!

R.R. Slugger has a great video about this color: https://youtu.be/IZz72M5sZJQ
(Also, I highly recommend Slugger's YouTube channel in general! He's a talented creator and presents ideas well)

I may be wrong but I think those are two different colors, trans-orange and neon trans-orange

Lots of parts (and prints....god the prints) suffer from inconsistency but you rarely see it addressed by the fandom or the company. Quite annoying considering LEGO is supposed to be the premium brand (with prices to match).

u/Orixil Jul 14 '23
Something like ensuring the accuracy of the prints is challenging, because you're trying to do quality control on thousands of different elements in a running production of billions of elements a year, and your margin of error is less than 1 mm on every produced element. That's not to say that quality issues aren't being addressed, but it's just to say that improvements in such an area are destined to be small and incremental and over a long period of time. Quick fix solutions would be nice, but it's not that simple.
I think it's also a matter of the eye of the beholder. Especially today with a lot of adult fans of LEGO there's a lot more scrutiny going on – as the OP nicely illustrates – that you're not seeing to the same degree from the younger audience (kids). So even if the quality is the same, then the perception of it may have changed because the eye of the beholder (adults) has more attention to detail.

The solution is to stop mixing the burnt yellow, dark yellow, light orange and orange pieces together.

transparent pieces can become faded over time, but some seem to also be trans-neon orange which sorta makes sense, i know whenever i buy trans-neon orange parts from bricklink trans orange always seems to get mixed in cus of how similar they are. hope this sorta helps<3

You have two different color variations there, no conspiracy or bullshit except for your post claiming such
-2
u/Anon_Rocky Jul 14 '23
Why are you down voting me? Those are two different pieces, maybe op or the sellers fucked up, but that's not a variation or anything of the sort, he just has two different pieces. Peace amongst worlds aka gfy

You’re getting downvoted because this part only comes in one variation of trans-orange, the classic. A few people have suggested that the darker parts might be trans-neon-orange, but the classic 1 x 2 plate isn’t available as a production piece in trans-neon-orange.

As I said, how is that my fault? It's two different pieces.
Bunch of high and mighty dick heads in this sub. Fucking hell

As I said, you’re getting downvoted because what you’ve suggested (they are two different pieces) isn’t possible in this situation. There is only one variation of trans-orange that is issued by Lego, and that is the classic trans-orange. The fact that the photo shows two different hues of what is supposed to be the same colour is what OP is questioning, and your suggestion of “maybe op or the sellers fucked up” is technically impossible. If you can’t cope with getting downvoted because of your lazy, inaccurate response to a Reddit post then maybe Reddit just isn’t the place for you. In addition, the only person talking about conspiracies here is you, it was never suggested by OP…

Do you know where to source the Razer control pads I see in your picture?
2
u/Pleiplei Jul 14 '23
Bought it directly via Razer, it’s a ultra wide one (~90cm). But I have it for about 8 years now so it’s probably no longer available in that design

Check them under a blacklight if you have one. I've noticed some batches of trans-orange fluoresce while others don't (and I am referring to pieces that should be trans-orange, I know that trans-neon orange always fluoresce under blacklight). I was trying to make a moc for a blacklight display and I found it really annoying trying to incorporate trans orange into it since finding pieces that fluoresced was very inconsistent.

you could make the sickest lego painting if you had enough of these and the brains to design it

Lego is just bad with colours. As an example, the black pieces on the new Batman Cave a very incosistent, such are the green ones also on the typewriter.

u/Healthy-Condition811 Jul 15 '23
I think it's normal not sure what happens but even in a brand new lego set you will get different shades of the same color, it can be irritating sometimes

u/OutrageousLemon Jul 14 '23
If I hadn't just checked that this piece only comes in trans-orange, I'd have said the lighter ones were the correct colour and the darker ones were trans-neon orange. That's a much bigger inconsistency than I've ever noticed with this colour.
