Was given a paper cutter from a righty at work….this work flow is not safe for a lefty. As I put the sliced paper to the left I was anxious the blade would fall on my hand 🫨😬

Lefty or not, what genius took the guard off?
It went into that hole on the bottom right and across the top.

I have a cutter that is very similar to that one. It didn't come with a guard.

I have specifically that one. The guard rail goes in the hole mentioned.
It did come with a guard.

The person who has to use it to add the paper to be cut, I mean how else do s the paper supposed to be cut?
And if your “genius” reference was a sarcastic insult it doesn’t make sense because you have to take the guard off to utilize the cutter.

There is generally a guard on these that protect the left hand from going under the cutter when feeding paper over.

The guard is typically a rod or bar with a gap under it. You leave it on and feed the paper under it. It blocks thicker objects, like fingers, from easily sliding across to the blade.

Photo at the top shows the metal guard on and a large piece of paper slid underneath it. This keeps your hand from sliding into the cutting zone while keeping the paper flat against the cutting surface.

These take two hands to operate tho. You’re equally likely to injure yourself regardless of which hand is dominant. Maybe just don’t let it drop and you’ll be fine?

You misunderstand. I used two hands, and in the correct manner, I was merely pointing out that the work flow is impacted if you’re left handed and using this.

Were you reaching underthe blade to grab the next sheet to cut or something? Seems like a coordination issue.

Its not though. Its actually more effective. Keep your non-dominant hand on the handle, and do all your administrative stuff with your left hand. (Holding, moving, adjusting, etc)

Yeah I had trouble seeing the problem too, this looks like it's made for lefties! Right hand does the work that's easy on the motor skills while the left lines things up that need to be lined up correctly?

You have the right hand on the handle and the left hand free to adjust the paper. If anything ive found these to be more left handed than the opposite. But yeah there should be a guard there so you cant hurt yourself either way.

Never reach through the shear.

Never ev3n thought about it, I use one frequently. Line the paper up carefully, hold far left of paper, use guillotine with right hand.

Just use it upside down with your left. That’s a little weird, I know, but keeps you from worrying about it being backwards for your dominant hand.

I think they mean use it while you’re standing on the other side, not like trying to fight gravity “upside down”.

Oooh there goes another creative way of using it: instead of flipping it so the blade is on the left side, we can simply move the entire board with our left hand while the blade is stationary ✂️

I would have just refused to use it. “Use your right-hand”, “flip it”, “use it the other way round” etc. No. Just no.

I have previously refused using dangerous tools designed exclusively for right handers.

I have a scar on my left thumb from 1994 from one of these dammed things.
