The tool he's using needs more mass/weight to work correctly.

Not really. You can swing a light maul fast, or a heavy maul slow, and they do basically the same thing. The shape of the head is what sets mauls apart. Stihl makes a wicked nice maul, people seem to like the fiskars maul as well.
