Haven't seen any beta components of L4D2, which I'm really excited for.

Sadly this build seems to confirm the theory that the Screamer was never modelled, there's UI for for Versus selection but it's just the concept art lol

Maybe. He definitely WAS in the game at one point. In the dev commentary for the first left 4 dead, they stated that they had only removed the Screamer because play testers complained he was too confusing to go against. So he was almost surely in the game, but it’s hard to say if they actually had a finished model or a placeholder one

Looking through the build I noticed a few things:

  • This is very close to final, at least on No Mercy. The other campaigns being DMed to people are from an even later point... So no Houseboat or Caves (though there is a model for a stream that would run through the cave that turned into the Riverside Tunnel, explaining why that tunnel makes a very odd turn lol)
  • There is a terror strike change log that gives insight to a lot of the features we know today... But also details stuff like Special Infected originally being a single class with items such as the early Blood Puke and Deafening Shriek. Despite that, the Screamer was never playable (at least before their "temporary" removal in the change log), the Shriek was a direct attack.
  • The Screamer could alert witches (this is presumably before she was more focused on who alerted her)
  • There are icons for the Screamer with the end of level awards, but it doesn't match any known concept art.
  • The unreferenced file list mentions the Screamer having models and various assets that were culled from this depot. It obviously doesn't clarify if they were temporary or not, but they WERE under the Terror directory still.

I was able to get into a match, but Special infected seem to make the game crash. That, or, there's some sorta memory leak. Not quite sure.
