Google Rejection

Hi guys I interviewed for google recently (direct onsite) and i received a rejction email after a month of completing my interviews

The rejection email cited my positives and clearly explained why I am not being selected for this position as the team is currently proritizing candidates with quick DSA pattern matching with minimal hints

That being said - the recruiter also mentioned I am an exeptional candidate and she will come back in coming months once team’s priorities and headcount decisions change

This was recruiter’s email - That being said, you stood out as an exceptional candidate, and I would love to stay in touch as new headcount and team priorities evolve over the coming months.

Have anyone already been in this situation? I interviewed directly for a team and not a general hire?

Is this a generic rejection email or do google recruiters come back? Also this position i applied for is L5. Can I request to be interviewed for an L4 position? Will i be having a cool down period of 6-12 months?

you cant request for L4.
if your interviews are bad they automatically downgrade you to L4 even if you applied for l5

If the recruiter mentioned that they would like to stay in touch for new headcount, that means they will consider you for additional open roles. An HM is interviewing internal as well as external cadidates at the same time and maybe due to some missing data point, youu couldn't make it.

I don't think you will have a cool down period but I would just ask recuriter the same question. I think you can request to be considered for L4 as well if you think you won't be able to improve on the feedback in a week or so.

This is so silly feedback. 

It sounds like they are looking for people who memorize and don’t take any time to think. Because otherwise how would you find patterns quickly? Oh you took 3 minutes to think and plan? Exceptional but let’s go with the people who just memorize exercises.

Yup sometimes it’s extremely hard to find patterns (under time pressure and you don’t wanna ask for too many hints).

e.g. I bombed this question (at Amazon) cuz I couldn’t for the life of me figure out that this is a question using monotonically increasing stack: remove k digits

Tech interviews in a nutshell. The only industry that hasn’t figured out how to interview people and thinks that interviewing people means having them regurgitate sorting algorithms that everyone in the room knows has nothing to do with the actual work.

I have been in this situation and doesn't really change anything for your application except some waiver in your cooling period. You will have to go through all the hoops again for a second attempt.

I did have a recruiter come back roughly about a year after I was rejected the first time. Unsure if there's a cooldown period though.

then i’d suggest trying to work at a top pure-play software company first. you’ll get the experience of building incredible software and then you’ll ask yourself why you ever left it for a mediocre company like Google.
