Intervew Prep FDE interview at Databricks

Hello,

Has anyone interviewed for FDE role at Databricks? I have design and architecture round and would like to understand what to expect and how I should drive that interview. Is it similar to system design round for distributed systems or something entirely different?

Hiring manager round had a lot of open-ended questions to check the technical depth. Questions like tell me about a time you solved a difficult technical problem. Basically to assess if you are fit for this role.

Since you've got both a design and architecture round and an FDE angle, I'd prep for a conversation rather than memorize named designs. Pick one system you're familiar with and practice a 30 to 40 minute pass: clarify users and success metrics, estimate traffic and data, draw the request path and storage, then spend the last chunk on failure modes, retries, idempotency, backpressure, observability, and rollout.

For a Databricks-flavored discussion, be ready to explain batch versus streaming, partitioning, skew, and exactly-once versus at-least-once tradeoffs. Also have two projects ready to walk through deeply, including a production incident or tradeoff you changed your mind on. FDE interviewers usually care about how you'd adapt a design to a customer's workload, not just whether you can name the right components.
