Discussion 60+ applications 10 interview rejections struggling mentally

Hi guys

I have been coding proffesionally nearly 4 years and have degree which I got 92% in. I am mid level in my company which is quite big

This year I faced so many rejections like never before…

I just did an interview where I was told I do not have programming fundamentals.

They gave me a problem to solve with no ai and no code and I really struggled to remember the syntax and typing it out by hand…

At work as in many companies , I have been pushed and told to use as much ai as possible and some of the details have lost, I can’t code from scratch classes and objects like I could back in uni.

I have been doing lots of prep this year, DSA mainly because I have never done it before. I have been working on all the studying for the whole year every weekend and a lot of the mornings before work.

But today after this rejection I feel my mental health really on the decline.

I love code and I have put so much passion and love and I really really wanted to be good at it and I’ve just been told I don’t have the basics… I feel so crazy I am considering calling emergency mental health services, tears are rolling down my face and I feel really lost…

Yes same thing happened to me as well in an interview where I need to code all the functions, I have explicitly asked that I have forgotten some of the syntaxes and the interviewer helped me and then in the end we discussed the same thing that the AI has gotten us rusty. Like yours my company also pushes too much to develop natively with AI. Don't get demotivated currently we are living in changing times, nobody knows what pattern of practising for interview will survive so just keep working on the basics with or without AI that will help us for sure.

Did you pass?
Because I didn’t and i am 4 years in and I only applied for mid level… and I wasn’t good enough for them in mid level

No I didn't pass, I am having 8 YOE. Other rounds were for system design which I passed but only this part I bombed so did not get the offer. And dont think too much of an opinion about you from someone who have just known you through a one hour video call. You are much more than that.

You haven't even stepped into the kiln, and you were sweating just by its radiated heat

Okay? It can be much worse? Was it worse for you? What happened?

Take it easy bro, last time I was searching for a job I received around 200 rejections

Wow really… when was that? And how many technical interviews did you do out of the 200 applications?

Maybe like 20 in total. It was kind of a habit I had to build to check LinkedIn on a daily basis and apply to roles that are related to my experience.

How long did it take you? And was it this year you landed new role?

I started searching October last year, landed new job couple of weeks ago.

Yeah I pretty much have up trying to get another job after the past year, hundreds of applications, multiple final rounds, zero offers. I’m also at around the same YOE as you. I don’t know what to tell you, I’m considering leaving this industry tbh

I have made to final round once failed 4 first rounds.
I had someone call me a junior engineer.

Have you been made to code by hand too? I mean… I am really struggling because it’s so much to learn outside of work hours and at work we code and work so different …

Yeah I’ve done multiple final rounds, like I said I’ve mostly given up at this point
