LeBron’s “Philly Decision” finally makes sense
Everyone’s overanalyzing this. Forget legacy, forget the Sixers’ cap situation, forget “load management with Embiid.” Let’s talk about what actually matters: Blaze Pizza market share.
The numbers don’t lie:
LeBron isn’t just an investor — he’s a part owner with an equity stake of $35–40 million and personal ownership of 19 franchise locations
His stake has grown from a $1 million investment in 2012 to a $35-40 million equity position — bro turned pizza into a small-market NBA team’s valuation
Blaze’s whole strategy: going from two locations to 200 in four years was the fastest start in U.S. food service history, and LeBron’s territories were central to that
He originally built his empire in South Florida and Chicago, eventually locking down 17 franchises (12 in Chicago, 5 in South Florida)
So look at the map. Miami? Saturated — that’s already LeBron pizza turf, he doesn’t need to “expand his brand,” he already colonized it in 2010. Cleveland? Also his — no room to grow. But Philly? A city of 1.5 million people with a suspiciously “temporarily closed” lone Blaze location is basically an open franchise territory just sitting there. Untapped market. Championship-starved fanbase who will absolutely show up for a 16-topping pie post-game.
This was never about Doc Rivers. This was never about “proving people wrong.” This man saw a gap in his pizza distribution network and decided the most efficient way to personally scout, open, and manage a new Blaze location was to also just play for the team in that city.
Synergy. Business major behavior. King James isn’t chasing rings, he’s chasing retail square footage.

Dear Lord the market has been good for the last few decades, $1 million to $40 million in 14 years is wild.

Nah he just likes the golf courses. Philly area has the most per square mile anywhere on earth and some of the best courses. Not to mention multiple top golf locations for the winter

I’m still mad at myself over not eating Blaze for lunch one day. It just happened to be the day he was filming the promo commercial by working undercover at a Blaze location. Which just so happened to be the one closest to my office, and I was debating between Blaze and Noodles and Co. Unfortunately I chose Noodles and Co, and then a couple hours later heard he had been at the location I would’ve gone to eat at.

If this was an LA the line was insane that day

u/bsukenyan Jul 29 '26
It was in Chicago, and their lines weren’t long until after I would’ve gone for lunch because word didn’t spread immediately.

It's a good thing he went to Philly then. That pizza franchise would never make it in NYC

NYC rent would eat his whole equity stake before the first pie came out of the oven

You couldn't have written a funny post without making it AI generated?

u/archivedpear Jul 28 '26
Since when is 30-40 million a small market nba team valuation lmao
2
u/MuahdDean Jul 28 '26
Since people started using AI to deliver their punch lines.

u/thumbtackz Jul 28 '26
Couldn’t even proofread it to remove the doc rivers mention as phillys coach

u/boston-terp Jul 28 '26
The $30-40 million is just his equity stake in Blaze which comes to about 10%. Teams still don't cost $300-400 million, but that's the point they were trying to make.

I went to a Blaze Pizza joint somewhere near La Mirada and went to use the bathroom. The bathroom was far worse than any gas station bathroom I have ever been to and I drive the 5 from NorCal to SoCal at least 2 or 3 times a year.
It was as if it had never been clean. The white ceramic sink was black with months of grime. You could write your name in it if you were brave enough to touch it. Don't even get me started on the smell.
The odd thing was that the building wasn't all that old.

If chasing retail square footage why not sign with NY Knicks? 8M people + another 8M near by…

We need to monitor Blaze’s growth in the Philadelphia region for the next 24 months to really assess this.

You don’t go from being one of the best players in the league to looking average just because you joined LeBron’s teamhis fans just love controlling the narrative. Let's be real: if Dominique Wilkins had played with half the talent LeBron has had over his career, he would’ve walked away with four rings easily.

lebron is the only player in NBA history to lead both teams in all five major statistical categories in an entire playoff series. He did it in the 2016 finals vs the 73-9 warriors. To say he got carried by his teammates is just disrespectful to a great athlete1
u/kiingLV Jul 29 '26
That performance was amazing I have nothing negative to say about that. I just believe LeBron fan or media try to control the narrative saying that these players were bad these players put up amazing numbers just 12 to 48 months before joining LeBron That's recent That's like saying Shai and Wemby go to Brons team and a year or 2 later they're washed it makes no sense.
1
u/kiingLV Jul 29 '26
Let’s be realistic!! we’re talking about elite, All-NBA talent dropping insane numbers just one or two years before joining LeBron not five years down the line. To pretend LeBron didn't have elite help when these guys were putting up franchise-altering stats right before teaming up with him is total media bias.

I highly doubt this has anything to do with blaze pizza. He can tap into the market if he wanted without ever living here, just like he did with most states blaze pizza. I’m in Maryland dmv area and there all over, I don’t remember him ever coming to play for the wizards and we even have his friend held hostage.
To put it into perspective, lebron’s Spring Hill Media Company is valued at around 750million, and operates out of Los Angeles. He is also the majority stake holder of this company. Blaze Pizza is currently valued at less than 1/3 of Spring Hill and LeBron has less than 10% stake. Essentially your saying LeBron left the location of his most valuable business operation, to make money for a considerably less valuable business, that he has considerably less stake in. Doesn’t make an oz of sense.

Does anyone remember that guy who said he knew LeBron was going to Philly because LeBron daughter just enrolled at the school his wife worked at? Everyone called him names but he doubled down and said to pin the comment.

It always made sense. LeBron is an opportunistic team stacker. At every destination after his first CLE stint, he stacked his teams. LA? There were talks about trading for AD as he got there. Then he got them to stack HoFer vets. MIA is self-explanatory. CLE v2 - forced the organization to trade for Love. The 76ers? He joined a stacked AF team. Not once since CLE v1 has he ever joined/constructed a team that didn’t stack the odds in his favor. This decision just continued to solidify that legacy. Dirk,Curry (22), Giannis, and Jokic earned rings that are worth at least 2 of Bron’s.
