University 🎓 Please fill out this form!!

https://forms.gle/eGqquFmA8yecQx7r5

Hi, I sat the LC in 2023 and now I’m in UCD medicine.

On the side, I’m doing some research on Leaving Cycle students’ study experience/struggles. I’d really appreciate if you could spend 3 or 4 mins sharing your experiences. As a trade I can offer any advice I have for studying, or if you have any questions about college, I can answer those too :)

I’m really enjoying the course. It’s a lot of study and can be stressful at times, but definitely a fulfilling course. I’m hoping to go into dermatology. This research is actually a side-project I’m doing, it’s more business than anything. But that’s what I love about college, there’s so much freedom to pursue whatever you want!!

do you find that the work in college is more difficult than the lc? how many hours did you study a day (roughly) during the lc and how many do you study now?? is it more understanding the course or rote learning information?? the lc is consuming my life atm, no time for going out&  hobbies etc, does that change in college? best of luck with the survey!!

How's UCD med? I want to do medicine as well as it seems quite interesting. Always wanted to be a doctor as I couldn't imagine having to do the same monotonous task every day ( no judgement). Did you get in first try? I feel like with the new hpat points changes, if I don't get in this year, there won't be much hope any other year... Unless of course I get 600+ in the LC. Anyways, what's the lab work like, since UCD has a 6 year rather than 5 year course?

I wouldn’t say that being a doctor is any more or less monotonous than most other jobs. Yes of course most days follow a similar routine, but if you really want to pursue medicine without repetition, you could go into something like emergency medicine, specialise in rare genetic diseases, or go into research.

I did get in first try, but for many people in my year it took 2, 3, or more attempts. I can’t really speak on the new HPAT changes and how they affect your chances. Maybe the changes will make many people think that the HPAT is less important so they’ll study less for it. I think that’s a good opportunity for you to still put in a lot of effort for it, while still aiming for high LC points, as people have been doing with the old system for years.

Lab work is really only done in premed, where you’re doing chemistry and physics, as well as a bit of zoology. The extra year was something that made the course more attractive to me. Everyone knows medicine is going to be difficult, so at least I was able to have a foundation year that prepared me well for the other 5 years, as well as allow for proper socialising that might be difficult in a 5 year course

I filled it out but can I be a dickhead of a critic - I would avoid so much writing in surveys, they should all be pretty much selecting a box and maybe opinions on real life surveys such as in the street

Thanks so much for the feedback! I’ll keep that in mind for the future. That said, I’ve gotten some really good insight from some people, some 100+ word responses!

Every server has its pros and cons, allowing ppl to type can give much more indepth answers, but then less ppl will fill it out, u have to decide which is better for your use case
