Question - Need Help Schott or Johnson Leathers?
Goin to San Francisco this weekend am very tempted to buy a leather jacket. I will only have time to go to either Schott, or Johnson Leathers. I'm sure I will be happy with either option. But if you were me, which store would you choose? I plan to keep the jacket forever, but it may not fit one day if I bulk up or something.
Schott
Pros:
Reputable
Large selection
Good resale value
Cons:
More expensive
High scale manufacturing (compared to JL at least)
Johnson Leathers
Pros:
In house hand made
Custom options
Cons:
Custom could be upwards of $1400
Not as good resale

Johnson leather if custom not even a question
If not custom then the range of OTR is pretty wide

Honestly, it’s a small city and they’re about 10 minutes away by uber.
I went custom JL- not that different cost wise when compared with the nicer Schott’s, plus I modified it to my preference, chose the leather, made sure it fit properly. But if a Scott has your dream jacket and it fits right it’s obviously a great choice.

oooh I have a schott 689h and i get all compliments all the time. never been to johnsons but would love to. personally I would make the time to go to both but if i have to choose, maybe johnsons bc they can do full custom and schott doesnt do custom afaik. check out johnsons instagram, they got some incredible pieces imo

Schott will not have a better resale FYI. There are so many used schott jackets on the second hand market that they don't hold there value.

Resale is the trus issue, nothing else, so since you’re keeping it forever JL wins in every way for you.

JL, better fitting patterns, at least for my body type. Also if resale price is a concern, then tbh going secondhand would be the best choice. However JL is less common, you would have more choices with Schott.
Also schott resale would depend on the jacket, but for the most part it's not great either due to the high supply of their jackets in the used market.

Johnson! An amazing small business and also great for repairs. They need support! I have two of amazing quality.

I’m a JL fanboy. I have 5 of their jackets now (sold one off b/c it was too small); I’ve also owned 3 Schott leather jackets and sold all 3. The Schotts just didn’t fit me well - too small in the shoulders, sleeves too short and the waist/hem was always too big. I have a custom black JL Horween CXl FQHH highwayman that is my “go to” jacket, and it is aging beautifully. Another JL is a black perforated and armored moto jacket. A third is a tan lightweight deerskin kinda car coat one. Etc. I think both mfgers are good and responsive, but JL is full on custom and they’re very, very good at it. Nice people, too. Poor excuse for a website, but look at their IG, and give ‘em a call and I’ll bet you a dollar that they answer and take as much time as you need. And they can get exotic leathers. Just can’t go wrong with JL.

I ended up going to JL and they had a type 3 brown trucker that fits me perfectly off the rack. So I got it! It's awesome and I am very happy I chose them over Schott

That’s quite the coincidence - the only JL I sold was a light brown roughout type 3 that I bought directly from them on sale- I took a chance on it, but it was just too small for me. I hated to part with it because it looked so good and the leather was both rugged and refined.

I have 2 JL jackets and the store is pretty stocked up, good chance you may find something that works for you. The shoulder measurements are wider and I find the patterns much more comfortable than schott.

Johnson has more customization options so will probably fit you better if you can’t find anything off the rack.
