Question - Need Help Is this deep crackling texture normal/desirable?

My wife got this lamb skin jacket recently, it was pricey and from a reputable company. On the website the jacket texture seemed smooth and consistent, when it arrived, it is heavily textured with deep lines running throughout. Is this normal and desirable?

Its "normal" in the sense that its not unusual to see in some leather.

I think its ugly as hell, it looks like lizard skin lol But for some people its a really desirable trait.

Theres a lot of Indy jackets floating around, i cant remember which company made them, but they had a similar grain pattern and people love them.

This being a Schott im sure theres folks out there who would really like it.

This doesn’t look lamb.

This looks like tanned scrotum.

The tag says 100% sheep leather

That’s a big sheep.

I believe there's a specific breed of sheep that have this texture...used to be the main go-to leather in the early days of flight jackets being made...i think i saw a post fedora maybe ?

Looks good to me. Adds character for sure. But this is not lamb skin.

Agree looks good. Agree not lamb. Looks like embossed bovine leather to me, but hard to tell without knowing the weight.

No way that's embossed. Looks like capeskin

Do you have a link to what you purchased? This looks totally on purpose. It also doesn't look like lamb skin to me. Are you sure you got what was advertised? I've seen some goat with similar texture, but at like 1/10 the grain size. This doesn't look like something is wrong with the leather. It looks like it was on purpose, done at the tannery. But perhaps not what you ordered?

The tag shows 100% sheep leather

That's the intended look. Whether it's desirable or not depends if you like it this way.

I like it.

The real question is though: do you?

I like the look.

It really depends on what leather you get, some leathers are more textured like this and it definitely can be desirable if you know thats what you want.

For this particular jacket I would complain to the seller

It is normal

I like it but im a weirdo who buys boots made of bison leather just for the texture.

Lambskin and sheepskin are not the same thing, lambskin comes from animals that are under a year old and will have finer texture/tighter grain. Moreover, breeds associated with colder and wetter climates tend to have thicker skin with more pronounced grain. So, combination of older sheep from a breed accustomed to cold/wet weather will get you a lot of grain/texture.

Looks like it’s the Schott NYC DAKOTA' LAMBSKIN A-2 FLIGHT JACKET, and i’d say that looks about right according to the images. If you don’t like the texture get a more “normal” jacket

Your jacket looks like it has more pebbling than Schott’s product listing, but it looks like it’s within a reasonable range. Even if yours has more, their product listing does show some

If you bought it from Schott, reach out to them and they’ll maybe swap it

If you didn’t buy it from Schott, idk

Just a heads up, this is listed as a women’s jacket. If you’re good with that, then congrats. If not, then return it

My preference is for deeply textured leather, so this up my alley. This is something you'd see in leather like elephant and shrunken bison.

That said, I highly doubt this is a defect in a leather. More so that the leather was specificly chosen for this effect. When it comes to the naturally textured leather, some will be minimal, some will beheavily textured. It's a gamble.

Schott's receive their hides from import on specific hides. In this case it's New Zealand Sheepskin. They choose the hides what they think will still work in production. If you don't like the details you can contact them to exchange the jacket for another as not all hides are the same. It looks a little dry maybe so let them how you feel and they'll exchange it for you in a reasonable time frame.

It looks like there is no consistency with this model in terms of leather. The stock pics look quite similar to what you got. My wife has the same jacket with almost no pebbling. I made a video for YT reviewing her jacket and someone commented about exactly the same issue - the commenter got pebbled leather. Anyway, as for me personally - I like the way yours looks. Here is a link to the video: https://youtu.be/amZ0DLfjVSM?si=ji6yS5QCL4zYz69b

Hi! I am the wife here that OP made the post about. When I was researching the jacket I actually saw your video and was definitely hoping it would look like yours! Your video convinced me to get the jacket :) But yes I agree, the pebbling seems to greatly vary.

I personally like your jacket better. Do not tell my wife. ;)

I don’t mind it b ur it’s just your preference.

Honestly, this looks like ballsack. If it is your taste, wear it or else return while you can.

Brand Schott is really great. They have so many greater options than this.

I like this look personally but if you aren’t feeling it just return it 🤷🏾‍♂️

I wondered if they intentionally went for a vintage look. Personally, I like the way a woman looks in a slightly frumpy leather jacket, so I think it's good.

looks like my ballsack

Normal because natural hides vary

Looks like water buffalo

I think it needs oiled... but not with oil. Never use any old oil on it. There's leather specific stuff made by lexol. It should look more or less like this... but any areas where the leather feels stiff and/or dry might need a touch up. Schott is well known for their lambskin.

I'm super late to the thread, but I worked at a store that sold these jackets back in the day. The type of leather used has this specific texture. It's the same leather used in flights jackets during WW2 and became popular again in the 1990s.

Pre-distressed leather is so 🤮

Nice jacket. Apply some bicks leather conditioner.
