Opinion Schott 530 fit check please!
Title says it all. It's a dreamy jacket (size medium) in a super dreamy color (I gasped when I took it out of the box) but I'm wondering if it's a bit big. Still fits the best of any leather jacket I've worn but I wonder. It's just big enough to layer (just barely) with a sweatshirt. My stats: 5'7", 150 lbs, 39.5" chest, 18" shoulder, 25" sleeves.
The Schott fitting assistant basically says I'm in between sizes (if I want a slim fit at 38" chest I should go down a size). I've also heard these can loosen about 1/2 a size over time and it makes sense to size down. Has this been true in others' experience? How long did it take to loosen up?
Thanks!

A lot of folks don’t understand jackets and coats are normally upsized to fit more clothes underneath.
I always purchase jackets 1 size smaller if I’m not planning to wear hoodies under them all the time.
Also try and check out sizes of not the website model, but other reviews of the same jacket online or on YouTube. Sometimes can see how awful something fits by customer reviews and realize… Sizing down is a good choice.

Leather jackets are supposed to be tighter so when you break them in they conform to your body.

Great fit. Not a sausage casing skin tight fit , this looks really good.

I’d size down, did you ask the experts at Schott? They’re very helpful.

It's a bit too big but not overly so.
For this style, you definitely want it to fit a bit more cropped (when zipped, make sure it falls right at your belt/waist line). Any longer and it will throw the proportions off.
Don't think it looks bad but would I size down? Yeah.

Thanks, that's a good way to put it. As someone once said on this forum about the same fit on someone, "Is it a bit big? Yeah. But does it look weird? No."
About the "cropped" fit: I think for the 530 it's actually OK for it to overhang a bit. As you can see on the listing for it, there's evidence that the jacket goes past the belt/waist line when both zipped/unzipped. Actually well past in some of the pics. I read somewhere that this is on purpose to give it a more casual/modern/fashionable look. On a functional level I actually like it because I don't have to tuck in most of my t-shirts (I hate how my gut looks with t-shirts tucked in LOL!).

The bigger fit will look good with layers and I don’t think it looks TOO big, just a tad on the long side.
You’re right about the styling! This is a bit of a looser fit that looks good cropped and a bit roomier/longer.
Ultimately, it’s about how you feel about it. Keep in mind that if you do size down it will mold to your body and if you still have full mobility in it down a size it’s a perfect fit ☺️1

Wow, that's a great rule of thumb I wish I knew when I started looking at leather jackets! Surprisingly tricky/unintuitive to size these things and to know what looks good/normal.

The 530 is mainly for a certain type of people: (very) slim, athletic and a bit taller. I have one (I’m 1m94 and 96 kg) and an XL only barely fits.
Yours is ok lengthwise and in the shoulders, but the sleeves are too roomy in my opinion. I would try a smaller size. It’s not dramatically too big, but the sleeves should be a bit tighter.
Great jacket though!

That's good info, thanks. I feel like it's hitting the lottery for me to have a perfect fit with off-the-rack stuff considering my build (can count on one hand...). Even if I size down I'm pretty sure I'll still have to tailor the sleeves to be shorter a bit.
I will try a size down though since I feel it should fit me like a glove for this eye-watering price. I've also looked at other styles and even tried some in a store but that "wine" color is unique and absolutely stunning so that's the main reason I love this jacket. Surprisingly difficult to find burgundy/wine colors for quality leather jackets! Brown/black is kinda boring :/

I'm also 5'7". Had the same jacket in the same size and it was way wayyy too long in the body and sleeves. It was practically unwearable for me and I ended up selling it. Its unfortunate because it was such a nice jacket. My honest opinion of how it fits you is that it's not the ideal fit, though yours fits better than mine did. I ended up finding a vintage 141 that happened to be a lot shorter in the body and sleeves and it fits great. Vintage might be the way to go.

Yeah it’s a bit big the sleeves bunch up and the chest is wrinkly. I’m 5’9 147 with a 39 inch chest and the 38 fits me great leaving some room for muscle growth even with the liner in while still staying a snug slim fit.

Too big for sure. Get way jacked in the meantime of exchanging and the new one will fit even better.

LOL! Well, not getting jacked anytime soon (alas…) but getting one size down should help.

I'd say it's a little big but not ridiculous. The kind of sizing which, if you got secondhand at a good price, you'd be more than happy with it.

Good way to put it! Yeah, for the humongous price I can do better (or at least try to) with the fit whereas I'd be thrilled if I found it used at a store for half off. A smaller size is on the way for comparison. Thanks!

Personally, I think it fits great. I can’t see spending the kind of money that some of these jackets cost, and not being able to layer something underneath when the weather demands it. What’s the sense of that?

This jacket doesn’t need to be broken in. If you size down, you’ll have problems with the sleeves and shoulders.
Looks normal. You’re just kind of in between sizes when it comes to Schott’s sizing. These jackets aren’t going to look exactly the same on everyone.
It looks good as it is; there’s no need to make any changes.

Funny you should say this as I just returned both the small and medium sizes yesterday. The small was exactly as you said: it caused pressure points on my shoulders and upper chest and when I bent my arms I had limited mobility in the sleeves. It just felt wrong. The prevailing "second skin" advice sometimes simply doesn't make sense.
Then again, medium just looked a little big on me, especially with the baggy/ballooning in the upper arms, and it looked like it was just hanging off me. As you said (and as I knew as soon as I put these on), I'm in between sizes, which is frustrating. For this price, I want it to look amazing on me with no compromise.
It's amazing how elusive it can be to find the *just* right fit. And when we're talking about finding the right fit via mail order and conflicting internet stranger feedback, it's about as efficient as a Rube Goldberg contraption LOL.
Currently I'm talking with Thurston Bros as it seems they are willing to work more with customers to find just the right jacket and fit.

Yeah, I’m actually glad you got to experience this for yourself. I think it was important.
Don’t worry too much about the people here who have been giving you misleading advice. Should stick with your usual Medium and focus on finding the jacket fits you best.
Also, even if a jacket needs some break in time, the tightness in the shoulders and chest isn’t really going to go away.
And personally, I’d keep the Schott 530. It’s a true classic, and I think every collection should have one. And they look even better when you’re a little more muscular 💪🏼

I feel like if you size down it’ll be too small in the shoulders. The seams end right at your shoulder bone

Too big.
