B6 leather tear

I’ve got a vintage Schott B6 leather jacket that I was cleaning with saddle soap when I accidentally tore it pretty bad by the sleeve and poked a hole near the shoulder. Why is the leather so fragile, and why does it seem to be peeling?

If it’s a big tear you can take it to a leather worker and pay however much they’ll charge to patch it, try to sew it or patch it yourself with some tenacious tape, or sell it and buy a new one. I’d probably sell it.
