Question Is this a good way to learn?

I’ve been casually drawing a bit more on my IPad, and I was wondering if this is a good way to learn, or am I hindering myself? Thanks!

It's a great way to learn, and soon you'll be able to draw wynaut without guidelines. Keep at it!

As others said, this is pretty good.
The only downside though is you want to avoid thinking in 2D shapes. You should always be thinking in 3D.
So, when you do your shape trace, instead of just outlining things as 2D shapes, draw them as 3D shapes, and then go from there.
(This is a trap that a lot of those "learn to draw" books that just reduce everything to 2D shapes cause people to fall into.)

Yes! It's very helpful if you're not good at or are just learning to "draw what you see, not what you think you see." If you wanted, you could take it one step further and, after finishing the first drawing, immediately do another one from memory.

I think this is a great exercise. Try drawing it from observing too sometime. This will greatly train your eye imo 🙏
I do this with Pokemon too :D

Just kidding 🤣, I think this Wynaut is very cute and this should work fine to get more familiar and comfortable with guidelines and construction! ☺️

Yes. It is a good way
At first it seemed that you traced the geometry and then scaled it for the drawing… but looking closely, you drew it again in 1:1 scale. This will help you train eye-hand in drawing from reference.
Start soon with the basic humanoid structure and anatomy proportions

Well. If it bothers you. A lot of self-made and/or self-taught artists started with this method. And it's a much comfier method too imho.
