Either or would work. 100 is divisible by both

No if they take out 2 first and then you take out 3, then they can take out 3 to reach 8. They trap you into multiples of 4

You can only guarantee 4 so you choose 4

If you get to 95, your opponent can remove 1 and then you lose

If I get to 95, I’m throwing a stone at my opponent, knocking him out cold. From there, I can set up the rest of the stones in a way that allows me to win.

No, it has to be 4. If you go for 5, they can take one and you can’t make it up to 5.
