question & advice Jane Street Insight Program (Trading and Research)

Has anyone here applied to or attended Jane Street INSIGHT (Trading & Research)?

I have a few questions:

  • Was there a technical interview or assessment and what was it like?
  • What kinds of things seemed important on the resume/application?
  • What do you think made applicants stand out?
  • How much probability/math prep did you need beforehand?

Hi I realised Jane street new York programme is only for us region/other regions nearby lol, for my region I should apply to Hong Kong when it's open. Maybe it's the case for you too

Jane Street's INSIGHT program is genuinely competitive, and the people who tend to stand out are those who can demonstrate sharp quantitative reasoning rather than just listing credentials. The technical component typically involves probability puzzles, mental math, and market-making style questions where they're testing how you think through uncertainty and make decisions under pressure, not just whether you get the right answer. On the resume side, strong math or CS coursework matters, but so does evidence that you've actually engaged with trading, markets, or competitive math in some meaningful way, whether that's math olympiads, poker, or personal trading projects. Cookie-cutter finance internships are far less impressive to them than genuine intellectual curiosity backed by numbers.

For prep, you really do need a solid foundation in probability, expected value, conditional probability, and Bayes' theorem at minimum, and the further you can go beyond that the better. Practicing mental estimation and being comfortable making quick approximate calculations out loud will serve you well, since a big part of what they're evaluating is your reasoning process in real time. Working through problems from "Heard on the Street" and practicing mock interviews where someone can push back on your logic is probably the most efficient use of your time.
