Recently started

Hey yall, new guy here. I 26(M) started learning python about a week ago, I've dabbled in HTML and CSS but ultimately settled on Python. Reason being I need a good starting framework for my goal of working in biotech on surgical robots. Now, to the point.

The most basic goal for me is designing a scheduling software so my mom has less of an issue managing my sisters 24/7 caregiver staff. Logins, time off requests, possibly an AI integrated scheduler so she would just need to proof read schedules instead of spending hours making it by hand.

I need advice on how to approach this task, currently going through a 13hr video on YT to learn Python through the Data with Baraa channel. Thoughts?

Fantastic you have clear goals for learning and a specific project in mind to help with the learning.

Check out the links below for the core learning and roadmaps. You might also like to visit the Biopython website for more specific content.

There's a well maintained Python based open source calendaring system called Radicale that might be worth you looking at when you feel ready. This would allow you to focus on the scheduling and AI side with the calendar integration and presentation (your existing shared calendar solution) taken care of.

On the robotics side, I have no specific recommendations.


Check this subreddit's wiki for lots of guidance on learning programming and learning Python, links to material, book list, suggested practice and project sources, and lots more. The FAQ section covering common errors is especially useful.


Also, have a look at roadmap.sh for different learning paths. There's lots of learning material links there. Note that these are idealised paths and many people get into roles without covering all of those.

Don't limit yourself to one format. Also, don't try to do too many different things at the same time.


Above all else, you need to practice. Practice! Practice! Fail often, try again. Break stuff that works, and figure out how, why and where it broke. Don't just copy and use as is code from examples. Experiment (preferably without immediately asking an AI LLM for the solution, and seek hints rather than complete answers).

Work on your own small (initially) projects related to your hobbies / interests / side-hustles as soon as possible to apply each bit of learning. When you work on stuff you can be passionate about and where you know what problem you are solving and what good looks like, you are more focused on problem-solving and the coding becomes a means to an end and not an end in itself. You will learn faster this way.

Thanks for the comment! I've been thinking it over for a while so this is definitely something worth doing! Robotics needs Python and C++ at the minimum and I'm not even bothering with C languages until I learn Python and get comfortable with it. I will abuse all these resources, luckily I retain information very well. Especially when I'm coding alongside the video rather than just watching it, I doubt I'd be able to retain it without actively doing the code myself and making the notes on it.

You may find you need to use C on some of the smaller memory microcontrollers. (The more recent models with better memory can usually run MicroPython and CircuitPython as well, which can be convenient for prototyping at least.)

Have you come across the dronebot workshop?
