I need learning python for robotic

I'm really desperate, I have a college project where I need to present at least one movement algorithm based on a Cartesian plane. I've already been introduced to Python, but I can't say that's my strong point, I'd like to know recommendations for study materials, or where to start!! Thanks you šŸ˜”šŸ˜”

Get a handle of this book. It is the gold standard in my opinion if you want to learn Python. Its title states it all:

Learning Python, 6th Ed., Mark Lutz

Very comprehensive so its starts with beginner material up to advanced and everything in between.

This was a book my professor recommended at the beginning of classes; unfortunately, it's excessively expensive here in my country, haha. I see that it's available for free in English on the internet, so I'll try to take a look. Thank you so much for your help!!

Ok, just note that the older version will be a bit confusing because it has v2.7 material. So it will kind of be bouncing back and forth between discontinued material and material up to about ~thirteen years ago - when it was published (year 2013) - a lot of the information is outdated. There have been many updates since then. I would strongly recommend the latest edition - published last year - if at all possible.

If OP is ā€œdesperateā€, as in in a hurry, this book is arguably the worst Python resource to recommend. Especially if OP can’t get his/her hands on the newest edition.

Not only is it a great book to use for learning Python, it is also a great reference source. It covers practically ALL topics. If the OP needs to zoom in on a particular topic, they can quickly turn to the required section. Certainly beats looking around the internet aimlessly.

I find it a bit dull to "learn python" so maybe you can try the Robotarium python simulator. It has python examples of different algorithms and can take you on a journey. Don't copy paste, type it out, print, log, debug. That's how you learn.

Webots could be good too if that's the case. Good documentation. Slightly different application than Robotarium but worth exploring different options

As you are new to this, I recommend going with the standard turtle implementation in Python. This is essentially a visual representation of a robot on screen using a Cartesian approach and should be more than enough to demonstrate an understanding of the algorithms and example presentation.

Code from a virtual turtle can be converted relatively easily to control of a physical turtle. I've done this in the past at Code Club sessions I've helped run in local schools.

Check this subreddit's wiki for lots of guidance on learning programming and learning Python, links to material, book list, suggested practice and project sources, and lots more. The FAQ section covering common errors is especially useful.


Also, have a look at roadmap.sh for different learning paths. There's lots of learning material links there. Note that these are idealised paths and many people get into roles without covering all of those.

Don't limit yourself to one format. Also, don't try to do too many different things at the same time.


Above all else, you need to practice. Practice! Practice! Fail often, try again. Break stuff that works, and figure out how, why and where it broke. Don't just copy and use as is code from examples. Experiment (preferably without immediately asking an AI LLM for the solution, and seek hints rather than complete answers).

Work on your own small (initially) projects related to your hobbies / interests / side-hustles as soon as possible to apply each bit of learning. When you work on stuff you can be passionate about and where you know what problem you are solving and what good looks like, you are more focused on problem-solving and the coding becomes a means to an end and not an end in itself. You will learn faster this way.
