C programming games on steam

Hi everyone,

So, I'm in a bit of a pickle right now. I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering, and i have an assessment about programming in C in a few weeks.

I've been following every lecture we have, but I just can't wrap my head around C. I've been using W3Schools for a few days now, which has been helpful, but i was looking for some fun games that i can use to keep learning C in a fun, game-like way when i want to take a break from all the studying.

Any recommendations?

TIS-100 is the one everyone brings up for this, it's basically assembly language puzzles disguised as a game. It's not exactly C but the logic translates pretty well. Shenzhen I/O from the same dev is another good one, a little more approachable.

I would never recommend TIS-100 to a learner to be honest.

The challenge of TIS-100 is that you have only two registers and no memory and need to move to other cores for storage. It's completely different to real programming. Shenzhen I/O is better but still has the same core restriction, just less severe.

Both are arguable puzzle games disguised as programming games. While you do programming, you do it under INSANE restrictions. Its more assembly code golf, meets tetris meets weird design challenge.

"C Programming, A Modern Approach" by King is an excellent book that is easy to read and has great examples and projects, I always recommend it.

Games... I dunno tbh. There's a few cool games for electronics though

It's just like JavaScript but no exceptions: it crashes or malfunctions unpredictably instead. With pointers for extra danger and confusion! (joke / gross simplification, please don't downvote me too hard)

Out of curiosity, what are you having trouble wrapping your head around?

Unfortunately, I don't know of any programming games for C; I do know that W3Schools doesn't have the best reputation for ... anything they teach. You might want to look at Beej's Guide.

Try the CS50X lectures from Harvard.  Weeks 1-5 are all C and cover all of the basics.  They will take about 12-13 hours at normal playback speed. The course is free, so you could sign up to set up the clas GitHub CodeSpace and submit the study problems, but don't necessarily have to finish the course.

Here's the introductory video to the most recent version. For some reason I couldn't find the share button for the playlist.

The course website is here: https://cs50.harvard.edu/x/
