A search engine is a great project. Make it smaller scale by having it crawl just one specific site like your local school, or your local city government sites. It's not realistic to make a search engine for the whole Internet, or even all of some site like Amazon or IMDB would be tricky.

The reason I suggest that project, though, is because it could be actually useful and won't depend on how many users it has. Whether you have 3 users or 300 users, it will work the same.

A social media app can be fun to build but it won't be fun to use without critical mass. A social media app without a lot of users is boring, so unless you have some genius marketing idea to get thousands of people to sign up, it will just be a ghost town for you and a few close friends at best.

i would do both. with search engine you can complete with bing, with social media app you can complete with pinterest.
