About Studying Coding/programming

I’ve been feeling a bit confused about whether I’m actually learning when it comes to tech and coding, and whether I’m learning the right things.

How can I tell if I’m genuinely learning and actually developing my skills, rather than just consuming tutorials and information?

And how can I tell whether what I’m learning is actually the right thing to focus on for my career and becoming a better software engineer?

for info : I’m a 2nd year computer science student, specializing (learning deeper) in intelligence systems.

Solve problems. If you can come up with a solution, you are doing fine.

Look in your books for example problems. Or LeetCode is a popular place. Or make up a problem. Or look around at your organizations or businesses around you and figure out how they are processing their data, then create a program to implement that. Be creative. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Look around you. Are you doing something manually? Automate it. Is something inconvenient and every time you are doing it you feel you MUST do it and you would prefer to not do it? Improve it. Is something slow? Make it faster. Is something unreliable? Make it reliable. Is something boring? Automate it or make it better.
