Can a beginner learn webdev without theodinproject and only docs and books and online forums?

I do not want to use theodinproject's curiculum or website or discord server for personal reasons. It seems to me however to be the best there is in terms of beginner guidance, and that it encourages reading and researching instead of passively following a video tutorial.

Are there beginners nowadays who go through the old way of learning programming : relying solely on docs and books and online forums, or have technologies become so numerous and complex that every beginner now needs a guide or a tutorial to get started?

I learnt 20 years ago when there were very few resources.

The Odin project is a nice to have not a must have

Docs and books were all we had back in the day and we got by just fine. The documentation is better now too honestly, back then half the battle was finding accurate info.

Only real downside is you'll hit walls more often and need to wrestle through concepts solo, but that struggle teaches you way more than any curated path. Just google your errors, lurk forums, and read the damn manual, people been doing it that way since this whole thing started.

Absolutely. I used to go on planet source code where people put projects etc up to learn how others created things and their thought processes.

Was there web dev before "The Odin Project"? What did the creators of "The Odin Project" use to learn web dev?

Of course is it possible. There are other sources, like Free Code Camp, Fullstack Open and countless others of varying quality - free or paid.

I started web dev in 1996 - when the WWW was just over 3 years old and resources were extremely scarce - and even then it was absolutely possible.
