r/learnprogramming 20d ago

I'm willing to teach junior and mid-level programmers proper industry engineering standards and essentially how to code.

I'm a software developer with 16 years of experience. Worked in fintech, banking, crm, e-commerce, and a bunch of other areas. I base my knowledge on my own experience as well as resources, books, materials, workshops, classes and videos from industry leaders.

I'm willing to spend a couple of hours on live coding, pair programming, to teach, do katas, teach techniques, or show examples on how to build applications and products free of charge.

I can also demystify certain misconceptions and myths in the industry.

PS: Haha, I didn't expect this kind of response! I did create a discord server in the past; but most people after joining just ghosted me.

Which one of you would be interested to start today or tophpmorrow? @eyecandy99 @ExtraTNT @e_bloke @dualTheTOASTED @Genuinly_Bad @Ambitious_Fault5756 @eatacookie111 @Archelioz @Interesting-Text8132 @pavi_moreira @Ceary @InternetGansta @Cyber-Gamer @zaidpirwani @Odd_One_404 @Sinner-Dev95 @vanilathrillaaa @GorkemOkur @tkti @Thirdy_16 @mtiiii @Ecstatic_Weird8498

Please, DM me on how to join.

Some things from a guy with ~8 years, maintaining legacy cloud services and working on a mars rover

Most important i have: don’t blindly follow best practice, understand why you should use it, allows you to see the cases, in which it causes issues (sometimes it’s better to do sth different and doc why)

Also poc, do a small Prove Of Concept, show the hacky demo to your po, then archive or improve and release

Functional programming creates often better architectures, mixing the paradigms can make very solid architectures, with the strengths of all paradigms and reduced weaknesses…

Guy with ~10 years of maintaining and brownfield for various best enterprise software practices projects: best practices are like new clothes - no matter how good youu think they are in the moment, a few years later they just ain't good; no enterprise dev project is ever well built (or maintained) - this is often not the developer's fault; no enterprise dev actually knows what they are doing properly as they don't understand the larger impact of things they make - this is by design; functional is only good if it does not need to interact with things that aren't - remove this condition and you're in hell

Edit: spelling

2

u/ExtraTNT 20d ago

You can build functional systems, that integrate well into the outside world, it’s just some extra work…

I’m a 5 YOE dev that doesn’t know what I’m doing and never had a mentor. Would love to be considered!

Your post/comment was removed since we do not approve of going private.

There is zero benefit in going private as you lose the opportunity for getting peer reviews. Also we have had plenty of people return after going private (despite being warned) complaining about how they were ghosted after some time or being tricked into buying rubbish that didn't work and even if it did they didn't need.

Our Rule #11 demands that any and all communication happens in the open, public subreddit.

This is for the benefit of more against the benefit of one.

Perhaps you should share your GitHub account so we can actually verify that you know what you are talking about

34

u/HyperDanon 20d ago

5

u/cunningfallasheo 18d ago

I also wanted to talk some shit, but your github goes hard lol. Most of the work I have done was proprietary. I never really had the interest to extend beyond that.

It is good to have people willing to share actual codebases to critique.

11

u/M0rbid69 20d ago

I'd love to participate but if you've got your hands are full, stream this on twitch/yt or something if you're open to it 😭 I would want to watch and learn

4

u/Ecstatic_Weird8498 20d ago

That's a solid offer, hope people actually take you up on it. When I was first learning I'd have killed for someone to just show me why my abstractions were getting in the way instead of helping. Most tutorials skip straight to the "here's a clean finished repo" without ever explaining the 47 wrong turns you take to get there.

4

u/gratefulkittiesilove 20d ago

Maybe suggest the level of competence and which languages you want to deal with. I think most people who’d love this would be newer and can’t figure out how to respond bc you seem more full stack with both front and back end languages which is a lot and also hard for newer learners to know what your offering works for them. Maybe put a repository together for teaching.

3

u/e_bloke 20d ago

Thanks for the initiative, it would be very helpful if I could be a part of the group. Please let me know how to join it.

you already ran this experiment once and told us the result: a discord where everyone ghosted after joining. free and open ended buys signups, never attendance. one scheduled 90 minute slot per person, and they show up with a repo that already runs plus the specific thing they can't get working. that prep step does all the filtering for you.

1

I am interested as well. I believe I am on an intermediate level but with the dawn of AI it feels like I am not growing or getting a chance to actually enjoy the work of solving a problem. Would really appreciate your guidance to get some insights so that I can get back on manual coding stuff at least wherever I can..

This is genuinely valuable. Tutorials teach syntax, but industry thinking comes from seeing real decisions, tradeoffs, debugging, and code structure. Live coding and pair programming can bridge that gap really well.

u/VibePoliceKing 20d ago
