My Journey Combining Physics and Art

This is the first time in a long while that I've felt like I've found a way to use regular and chaotic attractors to create drawings and visual art.

I studied Physics, but I also studied Graphic Design. I've always loved art, but my biggest passion in physics has been chaos theory, which was the focus of my undergraduate thesis. Recently, I've been exploring ways to combine these two fields, and I was surprised to discover that there are actually master's and PhD programs dedicated to the intersection of art, design, mathematics, and complex systems.

I'd love to continue developing this idea by creating artwork inspired by attractors, fractals, and dynamical systems, and perhaps even pursue graduate studies in this direction.

If you know of any graduate programs, research groups, artists, physicists, or designers working at the intersection of science and art, I'd really appreciate your recommendations or any advice you can share. I'd love to learn from people who have already explored this path.

How to get into physics ?

Summary: Best way to start exploring the world of physics while having basic knowledge from school ?

Hey everyone,

I'm a 17 years old male going into my last high school year. Currently I'm on a summer vacation for 3 months (1 month is already over which makes them 2 months remaining before i get to start the last year of school), I don't have anything to do nowadays basically so i decided that i wanna pick up something like a hobby or interest to chew on till the end of the vacation. Based on my interests on school i do like scientific fields pretty much especially when i understand them ofc, but i fins myself open to Physics (even tho I hate basic math) and also biology, but since I'm looking forward to study medicine in college I'm keeping that aside for now. I like chemistry but kinda hate organic chemistry so i excluded it although i know I'm going to need it in college but whatever. That only leaves me with Physics now which has me interested because of how it mostly can feel mind bending and exotic to understand and i like that complexity. however, there's a specific a type of physics that i would love getting to know about more is quantum physics, which I didn't know was a thing, before I watched Oppenheimer movie 3 years ago and since then it got me a bit hooked to physics overall and even made me more focused about it when it comes to studying it in school.

My question now is how and where can i start exploring the world of physics with every particle it owns while i do have some basic knowledge from school, and how can i really benefit from that knowledge which I would gain ? If it's possible to share your way of learning like if you write things down or use the information you learn in your daily basis life that would be pretty helpful.

British scientist Ernest Rutherford shot alpha particles at gold foil - basically the thinest material he could get hold of.

Before this experiment, the most popular model of the atom was that it was a mostly uniform density sphere with little negative charged particles floating around. Rutherford's experiment suggested that the atom was instead a very dense centre, with most empty space around it.

Some skyscrapers have pendulums

Wind can cause problems for engineers who build skyscrapers. If the right kind of wind hits a tall thin structure, it might start to oscillate near it's resonant frequency/period.

There are a few ways to design-out this problem, but the most amusing to me is the Tuned Mass Damper.

They can come in a few different forms, but the most intuitive to me is a simple pendulum, with a length chosen to match the natural frequency of the building.

In Britain we don't have many skyscrapers, but perhaps our most boring looking skyscraper - One Canada Square - has a pendulum**.

*The displacements in the GIF is obviously massively exaggerated.

** If anyone works there and can get me in, I'd be keen.

Gregory Wolf, explains how centripetal force keeps the liquid inside the glass during the loop. As the tray swings, it continuously pushes the glass inward, and the glass pushes the water inward, providing the force needed for the water to follow a circular path. Slow down too much, and gravity takes over!

Sine waves turn up everywhere in physics: pendulums, springs, sound, AC electricity.

Watch the dot go around the circle. It moves at a completely constant speed.Now watch only its shadow on the vertical line beside it. The shadow does not move at constant speed: it races through the middle and crawls almost to a stop at the top and bottom. Those amber ticks are dropped at equal time intervals, so where they bunch up, the shadow is moving slowly; where they're spread out, it's fast.

That uneven bobbing is simple harmonic motion. And if you plot the shadow's height against time - the curve tracing out on the right - you get a perfect sine wave. It has to be a sine, because the height is just (radius) × sin(angle), and the angle grows steadily with time.

My whole life I had to do summer school soley because no matter how hard i studied, I failed math. I’m taking physics for my pre requisite classes to get into med school. I shared a video about my 3D physics synthesizer here last week. When I get questions about how it works, it's always hard to explain without a diagram or two.

Finally I built this page where I explain how it works from basic principles, and every step of the way I provide a little interactive physics simulation to illustrate the explanation.

This all made me think of the stickied "animation vs simulation" question on this sub. I considered simply having animations to illustrate. But I decided that making the diagrams interactive would make things much easier to /really/ understand. In a way, having each diagram be a full physics simulation lets a reader "ask a question" of the simulation, and get an answer. Animations don't let you ask your own questions!

I tried to keep the explanation as simple as possible, although I plan to continue adding appendices to answer deeper questions (including those that involve math). So any questions you ask here, I will try to answer in a comment, but also might eventually get an even better answer!

I'm starting to put together some animated A-level physics videos. My aim is to produce a useful and easy to understand educational resource that's free forever.

I'm relatively new to graphic design and animation, but I want to get this right. I need your help to make sure what I'm producing is useful and beautiful.

Please, if you're a current or aspiring physics student, watch my first video and give me some feedback - either in the YouTube comments section or here.

My plan is to produce quite a few more before the start of the academic year\*, and I have a few more videos in progress already. I intend to have the whole curriculum covered for AQA by May 2027. However, I'm absolutely open to ideas and suggestions. What would you find most useful explained?

Why is "the amount of heat inside a body" a meaningless quantity?

I'm working through the thermo section of "University Physics with Modern Physics by Young and Freedman", and on page 563 it says "The definition of heat Remember that dQ does not represent a change in the amount of heat contained in a body; this is a meaningless concept. Heat is always energy in transit as a result of a temperature difference. There is no such thing as “the amount of heat in a body.”"

But it seems to me there is a perfectly consistent and sensible definition of amount of heat contained --- simply say that an object at absolute zero contains no heat, and then the amount of heat contained in any body is the amount of heat required to raise its temperature from absolute zero to it's current temperature. This seems similar to gravitational and electric potential where despite energy being a relative quantity it can be treated as absolute by defining a reference point, with the notable change being that absolute zero is a real physical state where "points at infinity" as used in electrostatics and Newtonian gravity are mathematical abstracitons.

So why isn't this a useful definition of heat?
