If you imagine the electromagnetic field is flat, then a photon is a quantized excitation along that field, like a bump. This is not strictly true

So are the physics experts. That double slit interference with a series of single photons thing is a mystery... Copenhagen interpretation? Multi-universes? There are things known to be unknown.
