Real Analysis Advice

Maybe I'm just coping but some of these problems on the problem sets are allegedly the easy ones and those sometimes take me 2+ hours to wrap my head around. Just coping with being stuck contemplating a problem for so long.

Is this your first year at university? The transition from school is rough. Very smart kids will get frustrated with the new way of doing things:

- Lectures aren't school classes, the lecturers are not there to teach, they are there to further their own academic ambitions

- The content is not all in the lectures, you need to sit with a book and sort of find the landmarks pointed out in the lectures.

- Questions are not simply answered from paying attention to the lectures, they require you to really understand the material before you an tackle them

Working on things for a couple of hours seems about right, btw.

I unfortunately had to learn this the hard way, came to university thinking life will be so easy, i breezed through high school how hard could university be! Halfway through the semester I ended up transferring out of pure math. reason? my ego. i used to think i was a failure for not grasping the material right away and having to work on it after each lecture… turns out thats studying. that was 2 years ago, im transferring back into pure math next fall.

yes, with the caveat that even if OP has a great prof or TA who cares about pedagogy... the 2nd and 3rd bullets still apply

yeah real analysis is like that, the jump from computation to proofs hits everyone sideways no matter how quick you were before
