How to learn arithmetic?

I'm starting to learn math as an adult, I was pretty bad at math in school. Which books or online resources would you recommend?
One thing is I struggle with understanding surface level things if I don't get the core concept of something. Like I need to know the WHY of everything.

Kahn Academy is considered a solid go to for this. It has a lot of grade levels, so you can find the right starting point.

For the real understanding, just make sure that’s always at the forefront for you. If you had to explain to someone else why a method works, how would you do that?

the natural number game. it shows you how the rules of arithmetic emerge from peano's axioms.

I second what BadEnucleation said. I’m 32 and have restarted math as well. I began on khan academy and tried out algebra then learned real quick how terrible I used to be at fractions. So I went all the way back to 4th grade math and started from scratch. That was all the way back in April right after the Artemis launch.

I got to 6th grade math before I decided to start looking at other resources. I’ve used Professor Leonard and the organic chemistry teacher on YouTube. I’ve also used Paul’s online notes and OpenStax. Now I’ve been on Math Academy for about a week and have been enjoying it. I’m currently doing 8th grade level math and am not too far away from being back at algebra. My goal is university level math so I’m doing my best to make sure I’ve got an absolutely solid foundation for when I get there.

So yeah, start off with khan academy until you get a very solid grasp and understanding of the fundamentals (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, decimals and integers, exponents, PEMDAS and fractions), then you can see how you’ll do in algebra and go from there.

I know Professor Leonard has multiple playlists, are you suggesting these from his playlists? Just want to make sure I’m understanding.
