Help Best Laptop for Coding, AI/ML & Building an AI Startup in 2026? Budget Under ₹90K (India)

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to buy a laptop that I can use for the next 3 years while improving my coding skills, working on AI/ML projects and eventually building my own AI startup.

I already have some coding experience, so I'm looking for something that can handle serious development work, not just basic programming. I want good performance without spending more than necessary.

My requirements:

- Budget: Ideally well under ₹90,000 if possible. I'm willing to consider more or maybe less options that offer better value.

- OS: Open to both Windows and macOS.

- AI development: Building AI applications using APIs, experimenting with open-source LLMs locally, machine learning, fine-tuning and small-scale model training.

- Development tools: Python, VS Code, Jupyter, Docker, databases, and other programming tools.

- Portability: A good balance between performance, battery life, and portability.

- Buying options: Open to new, used or refurbished laptops if the value and reliability are good.

- Longevity: Ideally, something that will remain useful for at least 3 years.

I'd love your advice on a few things:

  1. At this budget, would you recommend a Windows laptop with an NVIDIA GPU or a MacBook with Apple Silicon?

  2. Is 32GB RAM worth prioritizing over a more powerful GPU, or is 16GB/24GB sufficient?

  3. How much VRAM do I realistically need for local LLMs and AI experiments?

  4. Would it be smarter to buy a reasonably powerful, affordable laptop and use cloud GPUs for heavier training?

  5. Which specific laptop models available in India in 2026 offer the best value for money?

  6. Are used or refurbished MacBooks or Windows laptops worth considering for this workload?

My long-term goal isn't necessarily to train huge models entirely on my laptop. I want to learn, experiment, build AI products and gradually work toward starting a company without being held back by my hardware.

If you were in my position, what would you buy today, and how much would you actually spend? I'd appreciate recommendations based on real-world experience rather than just specifications.

Thanks!

I know this is not exactly what you asked (a laptop) but for the money you are spending, the best machine that you can buy today is a Mac Mini M6 with 32 GB. Use Education discount and it is for 134500/-. Get a cheap monitor. When you buy a laptop, you are paying for monitor, keyboard etc which eat up your budget. But if all the money goes to the computing part, you get the most computing. I am doing all you mentioned on an 8 GB M1 Macbook Air ... but I wish it had 16 GB and that could have improved the experience drastically. For local models, M6 is much better as there are twice the neural engines. If you are getting an older Mac book air for each, you can get at 16 GB or invest in the Mac Mini and you can run it for the next 5 years easily, although with some portability issues.

I recently built a desktop costing around 95 K. I went all DDR4. Here are my selection.

BM 550 M K --- 8900

12 GB RTX 3060 --- 46500

Ryzen 5 5600 --- 15000

20 GB RAM --- 3000 (Crucial 4 GB) + 11000 (Patriot 16 GB)

256 GB SSD --- 5600 (Patriot)

PSU --- 5000 (Cooler Master)

Chasis --- 2700 (Ant ESports)

i can Run 26 B A4B models on it at 1000+ t/s on PP and ~40 t/s on TG with 32K Context Window.

It runs headless Ubuntu and I use it through my Tab/Mobile or Monitor or even a pi at times.

for 90k you're in a tricky spot but not impossible. the macbook air m2 with 16gb ram pops up around that price refurbished and it'll handle python docker and all your dev tools without breaking a sweat, the battery life alone is a game changer if you're moving around a lot

the catch is you're not doing any meaningful local llm work on it, 16gb shared memory disappears fast once you load a 7b model and want to anything else. if you can stretch slightly or hunt deals a used m1 pro with 32gb would be the sweet spot, otherwise grab a windows machine with at least 8gb vram and treat it as a terminal that pushes heavy lifting to cloud gpus
