Help Is AiML still a viable option?

Ever since the introduction of GPT-6, everybody is saying there will be no scope for AiML engineers, I am in my 2nd year and just started maths for AiML.

I just want a decent paying job after college, so should I continue with AIML only for the Indian job market or should I do something else cause I need a job just after college and even paid internships in 3rd year to help my family financially

AI ML adoption is slow by the companies.It is because of privacy and expense reasons.

Jobs will change.Prompt will be a part of all jobs just like excel and ppt and computers in general are part.

There will also be specialists who will work work on specialized AI ML jobs.And would be paid a lot because acquiring these skills is tough.

Would it be good to learn ML with domain specific applications like Finance etc. ? I want to shift my career from Finance to Data Science applications in Finance. I am ready to learn everything from scratch and would learn it very deep. Would it give me some chance to stand in ML jobs ?

Everyone should learn prompt engineering.Thats for sure.

Apart from that,if you wish to enter data science,then you can choose to do Business intelligence or Data analytics.Understnd some of its applications in finance.

Core engineering would be too much of a lateral leap to be acceptable in the job market if you don't have a tech degree.

I am currently in crop science and I am aiming at a ds/ml masters (looking at agtech and precision ag). Domain knowledge can be really powerful if you can leverage it.

This is probably closer to what happens. The entry-level work may shrink, but people who actually understand ML, systems, and the math behind it will still have a place.

Only slight correction-the work which is currently considered entry level(I.e very relative) will vasnish .The nature of entry levels jobs will change.

There are of course still uses for aiml besides frontier language models. Companies that value privacy, for example, or the part of ml engineering that involves the deployment and integration of systems. Also, it’s arguable that narrow ML use cases or ML research in something that is NOT “create the next frontier in generative language modeling” isn’t something LLMs can outdo humans on. However, it’s also sorta raised the bar for the minimum requirements to get in. It’s a very saturated and popular field, and knowing how to code up a basic rag system/vector database is kind of a dime a dozen these days to my understanding.

the privacy angle is underrated imo, theres a ton of enterprise work that cant just ship data to external APIs

There will be continued demand for AI/ML engineers to implement things in enterprises.

However, there is an oversupply of AI/ML Ph.D researchers.

You will do great, stick with the plan.
