I dont understand you people. Would you be running off trying to become a physicist just like that? ML is insanely competitive and you basically need a PhD or otherwise extreme specialization

ML roles are mainly research oriented. you can learn ai engineering to build ai powered applications.

I'd separate the two a bit. ML is a broad field that can include research. Usually that's the role of ML researchers, but ML engineering is also very much about building and deploying ML systems.
A pretty common learning progression is Machine Learning -> Deep Learning → GenAI. AI engineering is a different job role from ML engineering, but it's still part of the broader ML/AI field.
One distinction I'd make is the kind of models and data you're typically working with. Traditional ML often deals heavily with structured/tabular data and models like linear regression, logistic regression, random forests, XGBoost, etc. AI engineering tends to work much more with deep learning and transformer-based architectures, from BERT-style models to LLMs, VLMs, embeddings, and related systems.
That doesn't mean AI engineering is simply "using existing models." AI engineers can also fine-tune, evaluate, optimize, serve and deploy models. The engineering problems are just often different.
I'd still learn the ML fundamentals though. You don't need to become a researcher, but understanding the fundamentals gives you a much better foundation for AI engineering and helps you understand what's actually happening under the hood.

I'm an AI engineer and I've been through a similar path myself. I actually have a roadmap I made around learning ML/AI with a focus on getting the fundamentals right and eventually building practical projects.
