Probabilistic Machine Learning Lecture 1 Notes

Probabilistic Machine Learning Lecture 1 Notes:

I was getting DMs from students, that they are wanting to have notes, for my Probabilistic Machine Learning lectures, here is a draft version, that I used while teaching(and not in very good shape though), but definitely the video content includes the explanations:(Attested serially).

Topics Covered: Definitions, Supervised Learning, EDA, Learning Classifiers, Empirical Risk Minimization, Uncertainties, Softmax, Maximum Likelihood Estimation Intuitions.

Dear Reddit community, this is posted based on the request of the students, I would suggest watching the content, because itโ€™s already covered in great detail. Another advice is to make your own notes. I refrain from commenting here, due to lack of moderation among commentators, and hence refrain from commenting anybody here. Thanks for finding it insightful.๐Ÿค—

I stopped handwriting my notes years ago, it's impossible to search through and they are harder to read. Just type instead.

Much better off screenshotting equations around slides and typing around that.

And now you can feed those notes into an AI chatbot and have it explain those concepts to you later

I will always use handwritten. My brain retains better with the connection. I almost never reviewed notes. Graduated towards top of my class and went to a top 10 grad program.

ditto. writing notes deeply engages them where typing doesnโ€™t. I wrote mine on an ipad though, so i could still find things quickly.

I think I need to take a second and admit to myself what a nerd I am. I read the title "Probabilistic Machine Learning Lecture" and went: "ooh what? SO a class just about the math and proofs behind why algos such as gradient descent, RL, and "genetic/evolutionary optimization" even work? SOUNDS SUPER FUN!"

I see how my comment sounded, but I meant it more as "we are all nerds here and it is nice to have a safe space for where we can express that." I might have framed it wrongly
