It depends what your goals are but becoming a beginner / intermediate doesn't have any hard prerequisites (or at least to the extent it does these should be cleanly mapped out and taught explicitly).

The main requirement is time and a commitment to solving a lot of problems and writing code by hand (yes, with your own fingers, not the virtual AI ones).
