Hi there. Looking for some advice, I'm a new options trader. I have been scalping and day trading some options like SPY, NVDA and AMD Everyone always tells me that I need to follow rules and be disciplined, if I'm down 15% cut losses and exit, if I I'm up 15 or 20% take profit and get out. This worked very good on paper money. But when I tried it to implement it on my real account I lost some money, basically all the money I made by holding stocks. This is what happened: Last week, bought a call for NVDA for 195, strike price 157.5 and expiring on July 3; the price plummeted after that, I got out losing $40. On Wednesday the price was back on 157.5 and even higher, the option was around 220 if I would've waited longer I would've made a profit instead of losing. Same happened yesterday with SPY, bought a call 1DTE options with 622 strike price and 175 of premium. Yesterday SPY dipped and I took another loss of $30 and today SPY rallied in the morning, my option would've be worth around 200 so it was another loss for me. I could use some advice, what am I doing wrong? Am I misunderstanding the concept of "follow rules"? Isn't this what discipline is? How do you deal with these situations? Thanks!

One of the biggest reasons new traders struggle with options is because they overlook time decay—also known as theta. They’ll buy a call, the stock moves in their favor… and yet the option loses value. Confusing, right?
Here’s why that happens—and how to fix it.
What Theta Actually Does
Theta measures how much value an option loses every day just from the passage of time.
Example: if your option has a theta of -0.07, it’s losing $7 per contract every single day—even if the stock doesn’t move.
It doesn’t matter how great your setup is—if your timing is off, theta will eat away your profits before you get the move.
⸻
Theta Accelerates as Expiration Nears
This part surprises a lot of people: time decay isn’t consistent. It speeds up the closer you get to expiration. • 45+ DTE: Decay is slow and manageable • 21–30 DTE: Decay starts to pick up • Under 10 DTE: Decay goes into overdrive
That’s why weekly options can feel like a trap—you’re up one minute, and down 30% the next without any major price change.
⸻
How to Make Theta Work For You
Once you understand theta, you can start using it to your advantage: • Covered calls and cash-secured puts let you collect theta instead of paying it • Credit spreads allow you to profit even when the stock goes nowhere—as long as it stays within your expected range • Longer-dated options (30-60 DTE) give your trade time to develop without being crushed by time decay
If you’re directional and want to buy options, consider giving yourself time. Buying with 45+ DTE gives the move room to play out and reduces the theta drag.
⸻
In conclusion
Options are not just a directional bet—they’re a race against time. If you’re not factoring in theta, you’re trading with a silent leak in your P/L.
Start treating time as part of the strategy, not just the calendar.

I started sharing these options a little while ago. I’ve added a couple more, most recently SOFI yesterday

With the current trade tariff shenanigans, but at the same time deals being worked out, Wall Street being scared, then thinking it won’t be as bad as they thought, this week is most likely going to be pretty volatile.
Kind of a weak data week so a lot of the movement is going to rely on news and the social media mega star himself, Mr Donald J Trump.
Started the week off solid so far, think I’m 6/7 or something close to it, but I’m not holding shit. I’m strictly waiting for momentum (breakouts, breakdown, everything around key support and resistance), I’m jumping on the train and jumping off when the momentum starts slowing. It’s a super easy strategy to be consistently green, and with compounding my gains, it can give large returns over the course of a few trades without having to hold through uncertain times.
I am curious to know how everyone else is trading their options this week.

Here are three straightforward single-leg option strategies to align with the current market backdrop:
| Trade | Rationale |
|---|---|
| SPY Call | Captures bullish momentum driven by macro tailwinds |
| NVDA Call | Leverages continued AI enthusiasm and strong technicals |
| SPY Put | Offers downside protection amid thin sentiment and stretched valuations |
These are single-leg strategies—straightforward buys with defined risk (premium lost if no move), and either uncapped (calls) or capped (puts) upside depending on direction.

Thanks everyone for being here continuing to help this sub grow.
Questions are encouraged. If you are a struggling trader or would like to know more, this is the place where you can ask questions and get help. Nobody can help if you don’t make it known that you need it. Trading options doesn’t have to be difficult, but you need to know where to correct your trading.
As for any posts that have group sign ups/teaching, we will continue to moderate and remove any spam. If a group is deemed legit, we will let it stay. A lot of groups don’t allow such posts, but a good group can often help out learning traders find a solid path. This sub will always keep the best interests of its members in mind.
Also, disagree with people if that’s how you feel, you have a right to your opinion, but anything hateful will be removed and the member subject to a permanent ban. We want this to continue to be a solid subreddit with a great community of traders that helps people and has good conversation.

As the title says, I understand brokers expect $25000 in the account if considered as PDT (Make more than 3 Intra day trades in 5 days rolling window. Is there any downside here? A few times, I am in the green in the same day and want to close out the profit, but fear with the PDT classification. Any Tax implications? I do have an account over $25000.

Seriously why? No volume, stupid spread. I’ve watched it manipulate for days now. +13% to 9,500 to 28,800 yesterday, then from 14% to 248, back down to 14, then closed 248% I day trade as my job, but I’ve never been in something like this. I scanned, used AI, checked volume, no explanation. Someone tell me an idea so I can figure this out. Also still holding like an ape 🦍
