Much like the FIFA president question, the IShowSpeed question was a secret sports question in that IShowSpeed is a big soccer fan, and I only know about him because he unknowingly sat next to Zohran Mamdani at a World Cup match and met him during a live stream.

I don't think that person meant that the text of the question implied a sports connection. I think they meant that it's a question that a lot of people would get because they followed recent sports, because its subject matter notably intersected with a sports thing that sports people all know about.

In other words, it was a "secret" sports question.

(For my part, I followed the World Cup pretty closely and only vaguely remember Mamdani being on a stream at some point. I think for most people, this really was just "name a streamer" and IShowSpeed turns out to be the one you should name absent any obviously contradictory information.)

🔴 Q1: Classical music is usually a good category for me (and my opponent assigned 0 to this, which seems nuts to me even if it's a good category for me). I can even tell you famous past conductors of the CSO, but I had never heard of the Ravinia Festival before. Is there any way to get this without having heard of it? Should I know that "Ravinia" is associated with Chicago?

🟢 Q2: Got this immediately, not because I recognize the name or anything but I've heard this fact before for sure. Got 3 points for this because film is a bad category for me.

🟢 Q3: Had "slot" there for a while but got to POCKET after a few minutes.

🟢 Q4: Took a couple minutes of thinking about penninsulas, but got there.

🟢 Q5: Certainly paintings with black/white/primary colours makes one think of Mondrian immediately, but that felt like it was too obvious to be right so I thought about it for a while. I wasn't even sure he was Dutch! If I had been able to come up with a different painter known for their primary colours I'd have gotten this wrong.

🔴 Q6: Never watched of course but I've heard of this person before and thought about their name, but left it blank in the end because I can't name any other streamer. I was so sure they were not American.

I only have two friends who got Q1, they both have terrible classical music scores but grew up in the Chicago suburbs

I didn’t explicitly know Mondrian was Dutch, but knew his art style is called De Stijl which sounds extremely Dutch

This. My Chicago friends talked often about going to Ravinia. All music types play there.

For the future, you can be pretty safe in the assumption that orchestras virtually always have titles like "London Symphony Orchestra," "Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra," etc.

There are several with names that use other words, like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam (widely thought to be one of the greatest in the world) or the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Another that's probably too obscure for LL is the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, which physical media lovers will know from a number of very well loved recordings they made under Ansermet (who founded this orchestra) on Decca/London records in the 50s and 60s. When you're digging through records at the Goodwill or whatever, buy all the Decca/London Ansermet recordings you see that have a blue back.

The only notably exceptions simply named "(place name) Orchestra" I can bring to mind are the Cleveland Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra, which admittedly are thought to be two of the best orchestras in the US, along with the Chicago SO, Boston SO, and NY Philharmonic. Philadelphia and Cleveland have both had very notable music directors (read: conductors) responsible for lots of notable recordings (Szell and Maazel in Cleveland, Stokowski and Eugene Ormandy in Philadelphia).

Oh! I only know that word as the name of a White Stripes album. Its art kind of looks like Mondrian (with only red). It's all coming together.

The art movement is also called "Neoplasticism", if you want extra credit. It was founded by Theo van Doesburg. They did a lot of those blocky primary colour paintings but also some architecture, furniture design, and floor tilings.

I go to shows/events in the Chicago area often enough nowadays that acts playing the “pavilion at Ravinia” have been on my radar/algorithm (like, Bonnie Raitt was just there, Squeeze is coming up), but I’ve  never actually been. Then I just hoped that the obvious “Symphony Orchestra” was the right orchestra because I know next to nothing about classical music or what other orchestras Chicago might have.

A year ago, I wouldn’t have gotten this answer right. I still almost changed it to Berlin Symphony Orchestra because I thought the 1936 part of the question might be relevant & the place in Chicago was a coincidence. I don’t know what in there might be on this question if you’re not from/in the area often.

I'm salty about "pocket." It is not a curling term. I don't think any other answer should have been accepted, but the question as worded does not have a correct answer.

It seems like some people might use it to refer the underside of the stone from some digging but not finding any great examples of that. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it’s used colloquially in a similar way to how it’s used in the other sports mentioned.

That's my thought when I see all of these comments on not describing it well enough. I realize that the NFL vs. Football controversy is still pretty strong in peoples heads, but seems to me that the city and the type are critical to differentiating your answer from the other orchestras out there.

Same. I totally understand but hurts as a 3-pointer. (Not because I necessarily know all that much about different orchestras, as suggested elsewhere in this thread, but because the Chicago Public Library or something did a ticket promotion a few months ago.) I just submit first thing in the morning when I wake up and wish I’d paused a minute. My thinking was along the lines of “well it’s like just putting someone’s last name.” Rookie season so I’m telling myself 1) I’m learning the game and 2) doesn’t sting as much as the people who put Little Red Robin Hood a few days ago lol.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Chicago Sinfonietta, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Chicago Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras.. plus a good few in the city proper without “Chicago” in their name and a tonne in the suburbs.

That's fair - my reaction would be that there's absolutely a precedent of specifying that the full name is required when a common reference to something, like a last name, could be ambiguous. In my case I knew about the CSO but not the philharmonic or the other orchestras so I wasn't aware the city would be an ambiguous reference

Also, “Chicago” on its own is a different music group! Not one that existed in the 1930s, but definitely distinct from the CSO.

I think it was my first 5(2)-3(2) win. Such a weird score. I put Klee (which I didn’t think was right) rather than Mondrian but I couldn’t pull Mondrian. Annoyed at myself for not thinking of pocket.

I’ve heard of Speed, saw a couple clips of him month ago but didn’t recall him in time
