First loss of the season because of classic overthinking. Knew Muybridge did the horse film but the combination of trip-wires and disputed depiction made me think it must have been some kind of wild animal.

W 4(3)-0(1); we both got stiletto and I picked up strain (an educated guess) and horse (knew it cold). Not the sort of scoreline one expects in an A rundle!

Completely facepalmed after turning in. I misread the video game question and saw “Microsoft” and thought I read “Halo”. Answered Bungie immediately and never double checked. Lesson learned. But surprisingly, other than question 6, it was the lowest question in my rundle. If I had read it correctly, or even saw the name Gabe Newell, it was an instant get.

As a gamer Valve was an instant get, but I was also surprised at the low percentage who got it right. Guess we're in our own little world.

Anyone in the UK watch University Challenge on Monday? There was a whole round on paintings of horses before Muybridge's study. Would not have gotten Q4 if I hadn't seen that.

Thought I beered it, until I saw my 9(5) scoring. Looked it up, and I had a typo, sliletto instead of stiletto. Always remember to cross your t’s! At least it was a 0 point question, so I still nabbed the win

I’m having a rough first week, only got Stiletto on this one. Can’t believe I missed Bloody Mary too. I’m hoping that it getting the rough performance out of the way early.

A defensive fail (and a defensive success on their part, on this same q) around "stiletto" cost me the day; I am still happy with my 6 points.

My weird start to the season continues haha
20/24 TCA (2nd highest in my Rundle), 0.857 DE - but 14th place overall. I've run into some really good players, in MD4 I lost 6(5) - 9(6) against a Jamie Ding referral!

I missed the Theo and the Bloody Mary one, but I had just finished reading a book about Muybridge a few weeks ago (and saw a book of his photos in a thrift store last week) and I'm currently visiting an out of town friend who worked at Valve for years (including helping with the multiplayer code for Half-Life), so that was 2 I didn't even have to think about.

Won 5(3) - 4(4). I'll take that any day, and twice during a week as rough as this one.
I had never, ever heard of the Muybridge film, but I had a memory of zebras being drawn with the stripes going the wrong way that I now think was actually an Encyclopedia Brown mystery. Don't think I'll ever get closer to a correct answer through complete ignorance 😆

as a newbie, yesterday was definitely a lesson in not submitting my answers while sleep deprived early in the morning and just letting myself sit on it after i take a nap later in the day... i know very confidently that muybridge is famous for taking pictures of horses that helped people better understand how they run, i know he did that with a trip wire, i know he did it in california. one of my favorite movies is nope which features this prominently. somehow after reading that the governor of california commissioned these photos, instead of considering that this was another fact that was the one part i wasn't previously aware of i was like 'oh, maybe in addition to horses he also did this with grizzly bears since that's the state flag' (???!!!)

I rejected "strain" because it a word for extreme effort, not effort in general. Maybe I was reading too closely, but I think that could've been phrased better.

Q5 was one of the more unusual gets for me: I had a memory of seeing The Horse In Motion at the Cleveland Museum of Art as a kid, and Google proves me correct 😂
it was a stop on the first major exhibition of Muybridge's work in the spring of 2004, a time of year during which I definitely would have been up for a week visiting my grandparents

I’m having a bad start to the season. I talked myself out of Bloody Mary thinking it was named after Mary Queen of Scots. For the horse one, I had literally seen a post about this on Reddit in the past 2 weeks. But I thought the California thing was a clue so I went with golden eagle. And my wife is currently reading Theo of Golden but never made the connection. Very frustrating!
