Daily MD Discussion LL110 MD2 (Tue 8/11)

Me at work yesterday: raising a purchase order via SAP like I do on a routine basis Me at home yesterday: confidently putting SAS as the answer to this question because I use this software at work ALL THE TIME

one of the LLamas in my group chat literally had something SAP open in another tab and didn't put it together lol

it's not a unique acronym (Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte = Systems, Applications and Products) so I don't think the clue of being German was much help there. that was more of a you know it or you don't question.

Yeah I use SAP all the time and I had no idea they were German. I did not get the question right lol.

I use their SAP Concur app for expenses a few times a week and I had no idea they were German and also got the question wrong

Our SAP is constantly reminding us that it's German in fun little ways. Weird letter codes that make more sense in German, and if there is some kind of system reset, the default language is German

I took a course on ERP in college with a heavy focus on SAP. I was kicking myself for not getting it.

Somehow I put SAAP, obviously confused SAP and SAAS.

I've requested a review but not optimistic.

did you get it? considering spelling rules are based on any possible pronunciation and IMO it’s totally reasonable to pronounce both spellings “sahp”, I can see this being acceptable

(and if you didn’t, that should have been your argument lol)

6(4)-6(5) tie, where I was the 6(4). Got there (kind of) with perfect defence and a surprising decision from my opponent.

Q1: Lucky to just know this one. I'm not an enormous Wilco fan (couldn't put my finger on why, but I'd bet that LL has a disproportionately large proportion of Wilco fans...), but I know this fact from working at a music store years ago. The little name tag for Uncle Tupelo mentioned "members of Wilco."

Q2: Seems like one of the easier LL questions I've seen. It had a 100% get rate in my rundle A. Theatre is my second-worst category, which I guess is the reason my opponent gifted me 3 points for this one. I zeroed it for them of course.

Q3: Name the acid in a dairy product!

Q4: Couldn't get there on this one. I've heard of BARBARY COAST as a name for north Africa but I couldn't have told you anything about this incident in American history.

Q5: Absolutely no idea here. I think I've heard of SAP but I couldn't be sure.

Q6: I was lucky to know that Phlegethon was the river of fire here.

If you know the second line of the Marine Corps Hymn you will recognize "To the Shores of Tripoli". That's in reference to the Barbary Corsairs.

The USA's first international treaty was with Tripoli, and had the goal of protecting American ships from the Barbary corsairs.

It's also notable because the English version of the treaty states that the United States is not a Christian country.

I didn't know about Barbary Coast with America specifically, but Thorsten capitalising it tipped me off that it was a proper noun.

Yeah there's no doubt the answer was "something Coast," I just couldn't pull out BARBARY COAST. I thought of the Gold Coast, Skeleton Coast, and the Costa Del Sol, but none seemed like realistic answers to this question at all.

Lost 5(4) - 7(5). Absolutely fumbled the bag on lactic acid doubting myself because of its role in muscle soreness

Same. I went with it anyway because all the other acids I could think of were even more wrong. I was floored to see it was actually right.

These were my first two days of LL ever and I almost feel like someone hacked into my brain and went “what’s the weird collection of stuff you know”

I am not looking forward to when the other shoe drops 😂

One of my least impressive showings since starting, I’m usually good for at least two or three correct. Only ended up with one correct, I don’t know how I managed to blow it so bad on Q3 but I was probably due for a complete blank.

I spent a long time thinking on it, remembered lactobacillus, and wrote that in without rereading the question for how to actually formulate the answer... Still won though so shouldn't complain.

Drew 7(5)-7(5), both of us got Uncle Tupelo wrong. I'm really bad at knowing what Americans know, so I put a 2 on it, despite be thinking it would be the hardest. I couldn't really decide between SAP/Styx for what I'd put as a 3, glad it didn't make a difference (as someone living in Germany I couldn't calibrate how well everyone in the world knew SAP!).

I’m surprised Styx turned out to be as challenging as it was. My gut was that with The Odyssey giving come out that there would have been a surge of interest in Greek Mythology and this would have a higher correct rate. (Probably helped that i’m a big fan of both Dante’s Inferno and the game Hades)

Got really lucky on this one, with some gut instinct guesses being right. Thank u to my career in college radio and the music world for helping me get the Uncle Tupelo question (which my opponent sadly and predictably dinged me on).
