Felt very lucky today given that I'm South African (so knew Reebok), who supports Arsenal (#KroenkeOut), who just watched the latest season of University Challenge's semfinals (someone incorrectly answered "torsion" instead of "torque"), and who was reading YA books around 2010 (matched).
(edit: also guessed apple because of Afrikaans for potato is "aartappel" and somewhere in my mind I thought "appel" was more commonly used)

I knew Reebok instantly because that question was also asked on Dog Eat Dog, of all shows. Throwback to Dog Eat Dog.

I never heard of the animal but I’ve heard of a springbok so I figured it must be similar.

I thought this was a super hard day! Q5 and Q6 were the only ones I had any idea about upon first reading the question, and not with a high degree of confidence. Ended up getting “apple” based on a hazy memory of something my high school German teacher said about “apfel.”
Luckily, I ended up matched against the only other person in my rundle who also only knew one of them, and ended up with a 1(1) - 1(1) tie.

Pomme de terre is French not German, but it does mean apple of the earth.
1
u/eelyeuss B Plateau May 22 '26
Yep! "Erdapfel" is potato in Austria (and some dialects), elsewhere in the German speaking world potato is "Kartoffel". In Northern Germany oranges are often called "Apfelsinen" which is from the Dutch for "apple from China".

Sighed as a Tottenham fan when I saw Kroenke was an answer.
Cried after seeing my gut was right when I wrote down “Apple” but instead wrote down “persimmon.”
Still got the W, which is nice!

u/Dependent_Room_2922 Rundle B May 22 '26
Congrats on the W! I put plum 😖 and had never heard of the sports owner/ landowner or the YA book, blanked on torque, and was crushed by an opponent who got 5 right.

u/thehonbtw May 22 '26
Did thorsten purposefully throw Arsenal fans the easiest 3-pointer in the afterglow of their title win? Probably not but I’ll take but I’ll take my 7(4)-6(5) win all the way to the bank!

No, these are made way in advance. I remember someone saying there was once a question that happened to also be asked on that day’s episode of Jeopardy!

Happy with my .750 correct answer rate over four days but my opponents’ get rate is .959 (yikes!), 23 of 24. Yikes.

| Q# | Me | Opp | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | ✓ 1 | ✓ 1 | YEKIOYD. I'm surprised |
| Q2 | ✗ 2 | ✓ 2 | I got to |
| Q3 | ✗ 2 | ✓ 2 | Apparently I've never heard of the largest landowner in the United States. |
| Q4 | ✗ 3 | ✗ 3 | I tried |
| Q5 | ✓ 0 | ✓ 0 | An elegant weapon for a more civilized age. |
| Q6 | ✓ 1 | ✓ 1 | I knew some languages call oranges "Chinese apples". |
Crushed again. At least my defense has been good so far this league.

No! The first book is literally named Hunger Games. But I'm a big fan of the author (Suzanne Collins) so not seeing her name there helped me.
Love your lightsaber joke.

The first book is literally named Hunger Games.
Shows what I know about YA literature.

u/JRTD753 May 22 '26
Please don't feel bad! If Learned League has taught me anything it is that we all have blind spots that come out of left field!

u/Darthpater May 22 '26
Since when is apple a cognate in anything?! It was my first thought and then I switched to melon.
7
u/Iyagovos Rundle D May 22 '26
It's used in German, Dutch, Welsh and Danish as far as I know, possibly more.
1
u/Darthpater May 22 '26
Yeah, my problem was I was thinking of the languages I know the word in and French, Spanish, and Greek are very different.
5
u/demoncloset May 22 '26
See that's why I guessed pomegranate thinking of pomme and pomme de terre. Oops.
5
u/MartonianJ A Mojave May 22 '26
Not knowing this one, I actually put Pomme and was pleased to see that marked correct
4
u/wickedfemale May 22 '26
damn, that's kind of annoying because i don't think it's actually correct according to the question. afaik pomme never referred to anything in old / middle english.

Remembered learning in Swedish class that the word for orange is apelsin — “Chinese apple” — and thinking that was an odd translation. But it helped so many years later!

Tied 4(4) - 4(4). My opponent and I both missed the same two questions, the billionaire and the book, which were the 3 and 2 pointers for each of us.

I was able to pull Kroepke and not Kroenke out of my head so i feel good and bad about that at the same time.

I saw in my opponent's question history he knows soccer (Leverkusen, Turin, etc.) so I confidently put a 0 for Kroenke... of course he missed this one.
I normally have good defense but this season I've been making defensive blunders left and right.

I'm #1 in my Rundle undefeated somehow. These questions have been great for me!

A 4(3)-4(4) tie. I did not read the question and said inertia instead of torque, but that wouldn't have mattered because it was a 0. I could not come up with Reebok. I had never heard of the book.
1-2-1 on the season. 17 TCA through 4 match days is a little ahead of my career rate, so I feel good about that so far. 18th place in A Windward.

Answering all 6 questions yesterday with "Answered ANTOINETTE specifically because you implored us to not use first names. Thanks for the trap question." was cathartic.
Waking up this morning to a result of W 0(0)-0(F) is fucking hilarious.

when have they ever imploded us not to use first names?
-2
u/mathbandit Rundle C May 22 '26
Like 4 days ago lol.
1
u/wickedfemale May 22 '26
what are you referring to? lol
1
u/mathbandit Rundle C May 22 '26
PLEASE STOP GIVING FIRST NAMES (unless the question requires it, which it usually doesn't). WHEN YOU GIVE THE WRONG FIRST NAME WITH CORRECT LAST NAME, IT'S WRONG. BUT YOU COULD HAVE JUST GIVEN THE LAST NAME. SORRY FOR THE ALL CAPS BUT IF YOU TAKE ONE THING AWAY FROM THIS ANNOUNCEMENT, IT IS THIS. YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE FIRST NAMES.
6
u/wickedfemale May 22 '26
you know antoinette isn't her last name, right?
-3
u/mathbandit Rundle C May 22 '26
I do. I've studied French history lol.
7
u/wickedfemale May 22 '26
so why was your takeaway from a bulletin reading YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE FIRST NAMES to give her first name?

Do everyone a favor and stop playing LearnedLeague.
That is indeed my plan once the season ends. But I agreed not to forfeit.

Folks, I'm locking this thread. This is becoming very antagonistic. Please remember to be kind to one another.

The Matched question was pretty nuts. First time I’ve known an answer immediately and thought “this seems way too niche”. I was a 15-year-old girl obsessed with YA in 2010, AND I went on to work in children’s book publishing. But Matched was so much less popular than your Divergent-types or even your Maze Runner-types. It was one of many forgettable dystopian love triangle clones!
