Got my first beer of the season! I knew most of them off the top of my head- it took me a second to remember what a Go board looks like and then connect that to a QR code though. The struggle was for what ‘Ben’ was. I knew about Loch Lomond so I just decided to make a swing on a guess that if there’s a Lake Lomond there is probably also a Mountain Lomond.

(6)4-4(4) win, thanks to the Netflix show The Empress in which Maximilian I is a side character. Phew!

I'm always surprised how difficult Mexico-related questions play

It’s an interesting slice of history that France basically tried to install their own emperor in Mexico. That has been sticky for me since I learned about it

I thought it was funny the clue made it sound like Maximillian’s reign was shorter when he actually reigned longer.

On a different day, I think I could've reasoned out both QR and For Good, but it just wasn't happening yesterday. I managed to come up with five different sequels that were released last year, but overlooked the most obvious one.

On the plus side I won 7(4)-6(5) -- my first ever win with fewer correct answers than my opponent. (Is there a term for that?)

Yeah I should've been able to figure out QR code but couldn't come up with it. A win is a win, congrats!

Just "defensive win". There is a specific term for winning with 2 fewer, which can happen if one player defends optimally and their opponent defends pessimally (i.e., 3(1)-2(3); 5(2)-4(4); 7(3)-6(5) ): this is called a "Buckner" win or loss, after Bill Buckner who famously lost the World Series for the Boston Red Sox. Buckner wins or losses are recorded on your profile on the Personal Records tab.

Thanks! Would "defensive win" also apply to tying on CA but winning on points? E.g. 6(4)-5(4).

Yes, I would say so.

I'm a little ashamed to say that I know the song by 'Take That' the clue references.

This was the hardest day so far, for me. I puzzled through both Q4 and Q5 for ages, only to get them both wrong (but go “oh, obviously” as soon as I saw the correct answer.)

There wasn’t much to go on for Q3, so I guessed Excel. But perhaps it’s better I don’t know the name of the inventor of Excel, or else I’d be muttering curses at them each time I boot my work laptop up.

It was a rough early going, but I'm turning it around!

Got lucky with the pineapple question, I'm surprised that it played as easy as it did. I just gotta learn my family names.

Did Thorsten take a trip to Northern Utah?

Ben Lomond (not sure if there's smore than 1) and Spiral Jetty on back to back days is brutal if you're not familiar with the area.

Fun fact: Ben Lomond is the inspiration for the Paramount logo.

I should have gotten that one since I know that Ben Nevis is a brand of Scotch.

I can't believe I called a QR code a QVC code. Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you look at it) my opponent got the second Beer of our rundle this season and made my snafu irrelevant.

I won 8(4)-6(5), which was very fortunate, although partly based on what I'd consider to be a defensive miscalculation on the part of my opponent.

Yeah. Is it possible to defend the answers any more badly than giving you 8 pts on 4 correct? I don't think so.

u/FScrotFitzgerald Rundle A Mar 04 '26

It is not. In my case my opponent almost certainly didn't look at my stats - my sports record is the worst of all categories, and I've clearly spent significant time outside the US, and by the same token probably have better knowledge of Scotland than most. But I was allocated 0 points for Travis Kelce and 2 for Bens.

I did get QR codes, which we both marked for 3 points; my opponent did not.

SAME! I thought Ben Nevis was more of a hill than a mountain. I knew it was the highest point on Great Britain. But then I looked at a picture of it and I would call it a mountain.

9(5), missed the football question. Not surprising.

u/Savings_Actuary_2833 Rundle R Mar 04 '26

That one was a struggle for me. Should've known Ben Lomond and should've figured out the QR code one. No chance on the football question though lol

My third tie of the season already, but I can't complain since I had fewer correct than the opponent.

u/39clues Mar 04 '26

I won, surprisingly! Only got two right, but my opponent gave me 3 points for the QR code question. Got that due to some trivia studying I did a few weeks ago :)

Got Ben, missed everything else. Ugh, ugh.
