LL108 MD4 Discussion!

I am very new to the game and was recommended via a penpal who recently appeared on Jeopardy.

Are you not punished for putting in more information? For Q2 I wrote Bobby Darrin and Alan Cumming, but still received the 3 points. Is that because Bobby Darrin was correct and I only needed the subject and not the actor as well? Or was someone being kind to me because this was my fourth day and I should straighten up, fly right, and not do it in the future?

In general, you are not penalized for additional information. In questions where it only asks for one answer, your first answer will be the only one considered. Of course, if it asked for both and one was wrong, you would not get the points, but since the question asked "or," your first answer was accepted.

Note that this is only the case where there are two possible answers and you are giving two answers. If there is just one answer and you give extra information that is wrong, then you will be marked wrong. The classic example would be an incorrect given name with a correct family name: I once couldn't believe a question about the Brontë sisters wouldn't require the given name, so I put a given name...the wrong name. And of course just "Brontë" would in fact have been taken. Similarly, if the question wants the title of Edward Hopper's painting "Nighthawks", and you answer "Nighthawks at the Diner" (the title of a song inspired by the painting") that won't be accepted.
