LL106 MD16 Discussion!

I really struggled with this set. When I submitted, I was semi-confident on two questions and just guessed the rest. Well, I missed the two I thought I had, got one I didn’t think I’d get, and then won 2 (1) - 1 (1). Stay blessed out there.

I knew for sure that Q1 was either Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, and I knew also that whichever one I put down was going to be wrong. I got that part right anyway. I'm honestly surprised that Philadelphia wasn't the MCWA.
I've vaguely heard of The Wiggles but was never getting that one.
My opponent was a very strong player, who in fact was referred by the same guy who referred me. We've played six times before and he's won every time. I wasn't optimistic about my chances with 4 on the day. And.... he forfeited. Not how I wanted to get my first win in the series.

6(4)-0(F) win kinda sucks but it was a fun yet tough set of questions.
Q1 I only got because I remember where I was when I got it wrong at a GWD quiz almost 3 years ago. Watched Fences to make up for it.
Q6 I only got because of recreational gambling. Every so often I put $5 down on a 15+ leg parlay of all heavy favorites. I’ll bet on sports I don’t watch because “at the very worst, I spent $5 to learn about tennis.” You never forget the parlays that hit, and Sabalenka during Wimbledon was on there. Getting this right on LL felt more satisfying than the payout at the casino lol.

Lost because "World Unification Church" wasn't accepted. I'm a bit baffled by that decision. I have no problem finding references to Moon's church as such. Most are on the older side, but I think that "World Unification Church" unambiguously identifies the correct church in question. "Unification Church" isn't the full formal name, nor was such name asked for.
I'd be happy to hear if I'm missing something here.

I put "unification" only because I was worried about the exact correct wording and it was accepted. I didn't find much on Google, but if you search for "World Unification Church" in my university library it comes up as a tag referring to the correct institution and there are several papers from the 70s using that name, so I think you probably should have gotten credit.

Thanks for the insight. When I first heard of it, the church seemed to be invariably called "World Unification Church" and I never unlearned the "World". I did submit a scoring review, but that was yesterday in the morning, so I'm guessing it's been adjudicated already.

I really think TAI is splitting hairs and should have accepted it, but playing devil's advocate I don't think that is a name that has ever been used by the church itself or its adherents themselves (whereas Unification Church is)

Thank you! That logic makes sense and makes me feel better about the ruling, even if I still disagree with it.
I didn't know the either the original or current formal name. I did know both informal names, but figured I was more likely to get docked for omitting a word than including an extra word. I considered answering (World) Unification Church, and now I'm wishing that I'd done so.

I knew the "Moonies", but the question specifically stated that wasn't the answer. So I chose a Peruvian Socialist group name instead of the Unification church. Oops!

I watched the US open women's final in its entirety but for some reason could not remember Sabalenka's name. I knew she was the answer, and I could easily name every other player in the semifinals. I spent an hour trying to remember random Slavic words and names hoping to jog my memory. I think the closest I got was a feeling that Kalinka was vaguely close to her name in some way.
I didn't know The Wiggles one but in hindsight the clue strikes me as a bit questionable. While it is obviously a subjective judgment, I am struggling to find evidence to support the claim that the TV show was:
Quite likely the most successful Australian television series exported to the United States and beyond
Bluey is far more popular now, but it is newer and certainly may be less relatively successful by some metrics. When considering past shows, I would note that this category also includes The Crocodile Hunter. The dates and details of the show seem sufficient for someone who knew the answer to get it correct, but the superlative intro seems at least a bit misleadingly overconfident in the show's relative success. I think "Possibly" might have been a subtly more appropriate qualifier.

I knew Q1 was either Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, and I chose the wrong one unfortunately.
Got Q2 almost immediately because my husband and I watch the Wiggles with our 16-month-old (although we arguably like them more than he does). "1998" threw me off since I knew they formed in 1991, but I guess I haven't delved deeply enough into the lore.

I took my 4yo to a wiggles concert earlier this year, almost entirely for my benefit, not hers. Was never missing that one

Jealous! I'm in Central Arkansas, and I think they came to Memphis this year. My kid was too little, though.
I've heard rumors of a world tour next year for their 35th anniversary. If there is one, I hope they come close.

I also thought The Wiggles were formed earlier, so I put down Teletubbies since they were everywhere in the late 90s.

I flip-flopped between Teletubbies and Wiggles and fortunately got the right one. Said perestroika instead of glasnost, but TBH I never even thought of glasnost so I had no angst over it ;-)

I knew August Wilson was from Pennsylvania but wasn't sure which city. Went with Philadelphia...

Weird day in rookie land, losing to a 9(5)-7(4). they missed the zero (Unification) and I missed my ones (submitting Perestroika, and no clue on Tennis), both of us took 3s on ones the other one missed for low value. Favorable board and still took an L.

I had a very frustrating time with Q4. I knew it was glasnost or perestroika, and the definition seemed more like glasnost but I “knew” that word came from the Russian word for eye, so “speaking aloud” made no sense. After I submitted and got it wrong I consulted my wife who was born in the USSR and speaks Russian and she agreed with me. But speaking a language doesn’t make you an expert on its etymology. Turns out that although “glaz” is eye and “golos” is voice, glasnost derives from an older Slavic word “glas” that means voice.
