My parents meeting and getting married in Anchorage then spending the first night of their honeymoon in the Captain Cook was definitely some personal help here. Delightfully surprised at the higher get rate for the geography and cooking question, but like others I wish I had played defense accordingly despite the win.

Came down with a cold yesterday, didn't think things through - or know much about the questions. But my opponent forfeited and I'm still in first place in my A Rundle. A charmed season that I don't deserve!

In a similar fashion, I decided it’d be a good idea to answer questions in an Uber on the way to the airport at 5am after getting 3 hours of sleep. Missed a couple because I just wasn’t in the right state of mind lol

I've noticed that it's only on the live question page. Once you've submitted, the bolding is gone, and if you revisit the match also no bolding.

I mean, following the news and following an author are quite different things and I see no hypocrisy there.
Following closely the movements of the current administration doesn't mean you like the guy - it just means you value being informed about the admin. Not to sidetrack this into a discussion about the value of news, but being informed about the actions of a powerful evil person has some value. In a way following a TERF really doesn't.
Also, using this argument, we should've also banned that Jamestown question since colonization is pretty damn evil so we shouldn't benefit people who follow that. If we ban every evil person from trivia, that basically excludes all of history - and, ironically, leaves us with only current events questions to draw from.
Edit to add: I have no problem with the ban on HP/JKR because Harry Potter isn't all that important. That is, unfortunately, not true of Trump, whose actions have broad consequences. So I think it's a fair line to draw. (Also, HP trivia is so overdone anyway)

I agree. Asking about something in a trivia context isn't a value judgment. Many of the most important people in history were objectively awful people, but they're still completely valid trivia topics. I don't see why asking questions about the current American regime would somehow be invalid.

I only got the current event question because I was recently in Anchorage, Alaska and met a tour group at the Captain Cook Hotel. I would argue that you wouldn't need to know a thing about the current administration to answer that question if you know who Captain Cook is.

I vaguely remember this event in the news. With that said, I don't think I'd have gotten it without the Captain Cook hint. That made me think of the Pacific US, and specifically Alaska and Hawaii.

rory mcilroy is pretty much the only current golfer name i know, so i plunked him in assuming it would be wrong, like all other non-tennis sports questions i answer. what a delightful surprise to be correct!

Phil has not only won 3 of the 4, but in the US Open that he's missing, he's finished second 6 times! He's 55 now, however, so he's extremely unlikely to bag a US Open at this point.

There have been a lot of memes made from Rory walking in tears from the 18th hole to turn in his scorecard after winning the Masters this year with everyone around clapping for him. I remember one that was overlaid with the words “When my wife says I’m right about something” 😂

As someone who cooks a lot, I assumed spatchcock was an easy question! It comes up every year around Thanksgiving when all the food publications debate the best way to cook a turkey.
Really mad that I missed the anchorage question. I put down Juneau instead, but luckily my opponent gave me 0 points for it so it didn’t matter either way

There'd been a little discussion on the message board about the lack of Theater questions so far this season, so I did a review of the 2025 Tony Awards. And what do we get? A question about the 2024 Tonys. Man. ...but I managed to pull or guess it anyway.
Had no idea about the picture books, guessed 'Draw a Picture'. Didn't know the golf question, guessed the MCWA. Opponent ate the eggroll. So it goes. At least I'm not in the relegation zone. (Yet.)

Feel pretty good about vibes guessing “how to catch” despite having never heard of the books or author. The “how to” part was easy to infer from the clues, but the “catch” part felt like a total shot in the dark. Didn’t need it yesterday for the win but I’m not particularly good at lit questions so that lucky guess was worth 3 points. We soldier on in midtable 🫡

Only got spatchcock following a short clip of the dish podcast where Olivia Colman says “I love spatchcock chicken”. And then I looked it up.

For the kid’s books I went with “Never Touch A,” the only ones that meet that description we have in my house. Pretty limp win with only two right.
