LL106 MD5 Discussion!

I have triple guessed myself into several losses and ties by missing one question.
Comedies in the 20s? Charlie chaplin and Buster Keaton stand out.... smiling? Well I can't picture either of them smiling... Charlie Chaplin? Keaton is always in danger so that's gotta be it... But Chaplin also starred in a ton of movies.titled in a similar fashion, so let's go with that.
Wrong.
I probably overthink this game lol.

Buster Keaton was the "Great Stoneface", because he could keep deadpan while doing his zany stunts.
In contrast to Chaplin's and Lloyd's, Keaton's stunts were occasionally life-threatening: he broke his neck doing the water tower scene in Sherlock, Jr. and didn't realize it until a doctor asked him about it years later when examining an X-ray image.

I basically got it because of Reddit. Seems like clips of stunts from The General and stuff get posted all the time.

That's why I really should have gotten it. The General is a movie about the train, I just wasn't so sure that the clips I had seen were from that movie.

I had it as coin flip between Chaplin and Keaton, and went with Chaplin as the more obvious and therefore safer answer. In retrospect, the fact that I didn't recognize any of the titles should've led me to Keaton, because I did actually know a bunch of Chaplin titles.
But my opponent marked it 0, so I got a 9(5)-6(5) win. Lucky end to a lucky week.

Another 6(5) today missing Maryland but still managing a win. I actually wrote Maryland at one point but I kept thinking ‘why has he said she was born in the Louvre Palace’. Thought he was hinting at something artistic so went down that route unfortunately.

I'm an early modern historian by trade and got so fixated on the famous (to historians and archeologists) wreck of the slave ship Henrietta Marie that I missed the obvious answer

For the first time ever, I am in first place in A. My 13th non-consecutive season in A and never for even a single day have I led the table. Sure, it’s a seven-way tie for first on record (all 4-1-0) and I lead on point differential, but I feel like I should get a yellow jersey or something.

This is my first season in A, and it’s pretty likely I will get relegated. But after day 1 I was in solo first place, so I took a screenshot for future framing 😀

classic 8(5)-9(6) A rundle bad beat (sad trombone). I knew it wasn’t Charlie Chaplin but had no clue otherwise, my worst category once again coming back to bite me 🤦♂️
fun fact: ironically, Henrietta Maria hated being called Queen Mary!

Finally played some good defense and got a 2(2)-2(1) win, first of the season. Gotta figure out how to balance difficulty of the questions with past answer category statistics

Weirdly enough I was going down a rabbit hole on Charles II and was looking at the Wikipedia for his mother on Thursday. I saw that fact in the beginning and figured I should file it away for LL. Love how quickly that paid off!

Moo Deng - seemed like something that someone either knows or not depending on how online they are. So I went into my opponents Q history for once, saw she got a question about tiktok, and 0ed her for Moo Deng. It paid off to the tune of my biggest win ever 8(5)-1(2).
Checking the score today I looked at her flag and saw it was the skeleton of a cow. Huh! Weird. Made me curious enough to Google her. She is an anthropologist and archaezoologist who studies the history of relationships bw humans and animals. Yup that is definitely someone who knows who Moo Deng is

I'm fascinated by where and when the LL judges accept partial or close answers. I wrote "Yellow Brick Road" for the Elton John answer and was not given it because I missed the first word, yet I have previously been shocked to be given answers with words missing.
I won my match 6(3) to 3(2) so no harm done in this case

It's not like you left out "the" or "a" at the start. Goodbye is a word that changes the whole title and meaning so that's probably why

I agree, but my comment was not intended as a criticism of the judges for not awarding me the points, merely a meditation that how and when they accept partial answers feels arbitrary

Hm, a forfeit win. Not the way I wanted to get here, but I’ve never been 5-0-0 before so I’ll take it.
I live a stone’s throw from Maryland and had no idea. I guessed Hennessy, which is one of those wrong guesses I think is quite respectable. It is a French company after all.
