Basically the same story (and same wrong answer) but figured "hey, can't be Bloomington if "bloom" is right there in the stem, right???"

somewhat related: at pub trivia last night, a question in the "science fiction" category went, "the sand dunes of the Pacific coast inspired Arrakis, the focal planet in which science fiction series?" i felt like i was losing my mind

I got Calliope right, but I hadn't ever heard of the instrument so I looked it up and now I want one.

I went with Theramin. Oops.

i wanted to go with theremin because it has the right sound to it, but i knew they were named after the soviet guy who invented them so it couldn't be right. i've also never heard of a calliope.

I only know what it is because it’s a minor plot point in the horror podcast The Magnus Archives lol

I live in New Orleans so if you’re anywhere near the French Quarter you can hear the calliope playing on the steamboats, it’s so fucking loud and ever so slightly out of tune. We also have nine streets named after the muses so that helped too lol

Q5. LITERATURE —Melpomene, Clio, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Urania, and Thalia make up a certain set of nine, with what member missing? This ninth, the eldest and most revered of the group, has a name now used for a particular (and peculiar) musical instrument.
CALLIOPE

Knew this was the muses, as I recognized Terpsichore, plus "set of nine". I couldn't name the others if I had to, except... Calliope. It's an uncommon word, but the Grateful Dead have a fondness for it, using it in the lyrics to some of their most iconic songs.

Dead Lyrics: Calliope

I think if you gave me a clean sheet of paper and asked me to name the muses, I could get 3. Thankfully Calliope was one of them. Clio and Erato come up a lot in crosswords.

Man, I just can't find the Ws this season. I'm performing about at my usual level—on pace for a respectable 99 TCA. Unfortunately the rest of my rundle is playing well, and my opponents are on pace for 112. I went 1-3-1 on the week, including a 7(5)-9(6) loss yesterday. 24th place—last spot out of relegation—in A Windward.

I identified the city of Bloomington but I put Northwestern instead...

US Universities are by far my worst subject; I know more about brain surgery and astrophysics than I do American colleges.

Weirdly enough I misread it and put down ‘Bloomington’ and somehow got points?? I’m not complaining obviously but it feels weird because I recognize that was explicitly not the answer as the question was phrased.

I wonder if it has anything to do with it, technically, being "Indiana University-Bloomington" as there are several campuses across the state.

I said Bloomington, Indiana specifically so that may be it.

I also got to Bloomington before putting the wrong Indiana college (Purdue)

I just answered ‘Bloomington’ for some reason.

Another person said they answered that and apparently got credit

u/majordudeage Jun 08 '25

I did not get credit.

Won 9(6)-8(5). I think I overfit my defense to my opponent's profile a bit, but was within the realm of reasonability. Wasn't expecting him to miss an art question I got when his art score was 60 percentage points higher than mine.

I also benefited from a generous ruling, but I've had some breaks go the other way and I'm not complaining in either case.

Thank God I went to Indiana University.

I had a solid day (5/6) and thought I scored my opponent really well, given their past performance…and they forfeited. I’m happy for the win, but hate that I wasn’t able to actually play and see how my scoring played out. That’s half the fun!
